Shades of blue & cream faux hydrangeas and a fabric flower are combined to decorate this simple summer sugar mold!
I like to decorate our entryway with seasonal touches. For summer, I chose a coastal farmhouse color palette featuring shades of blue and cream. This color palette is one of my favorites for summerthyme decorating! The focal point of this display is a sugar mold.
Let’s See How I Put it All Together!
Before-
The entryway of our home is narrow. The marble topped chest of drawers was my paternal grandfather’s. It is a great place to store matches and candles in case of a power outage. I also store extra batteries for the battery operated candles. The bottom area offers a place to store candle holders and some vintage glasses that belonged to my grandmother.
This is obviously an old picture of the chest of drawers. The corner cabinet that you can see reflected in the mirror was recently painted and now looks like this:

The oak framed mirror leaning on top of the chest was something my Mother found at an antique store in Rabbit Hash, KY many years ago. Where is Rabbit Hash you ask? It is a small town along the banks of the Ohio River. My parents and I as well as some girls from the office I worked at at the time took a trip to Rabbit Hash on year over the Labor Day holiday. To learn more about Rabbit Hash and our day trip, please see The Story Behind the Mirror
After-
Instead of a wreath, I hung a framed print over the mirror. The geometrical design of the print adds extra interest to the area. The pair of candlesticks look like they are made out of wood but they are actually resin. The candles are battery operated. They are unique in that they have an option to either change colors and rotate through a variety of colors or stay lit with a solid yellow “flame”. I chose to keep them at the solid yellow setting, as shown below.
Sugar Mold & A Wooden Divided Box
In addition to the battery candles on top of the resin candlesticks, I used a white pillar that I have had for quite some time. I honestly don’t even remember where it came from. The divided wooden box is a fairly recent purchase. I purchased it at my favorite store in central Illinois when I was back “home” one Spring. The box could be hung on the wall as a shadow box as well. I filled the box with little pots of faux herbs and two cream hydrangea heads.
The hydrangea heads and the candlesticks were previously used to decorate the mantel in the Illinois farmhouse.

What is behind the box?
Behind the divided wooden box, I placed a cream colored sugar mold. I love sugar molds! Maybe not quite as much as I love dough bowls but I love to decorate with sugar molds!
You may be wondering what a sugar mold is. Sugar used to be sold to consumers in cone shapes. This was before granulated sugar came on the market. A sugar mold was used to form the sugar into the cone shapes.
Now they are used as fun, home decor pieces. Sugar molds come in all different sizes. I have two 6-hole ones (one white, one natural), a 3 hole one and one that just has one hole. All of mine are reproduction ones, not antiques.
To decorate the sugar mold for summer, I used deep blue hydrangea flowers that were originally part of a garland. I used my handy dandy bolt cutters to cut the garland apart.
To make the “flower” , I cut the embroidered trim off of this tattered pillow case.
The material is actually left over from this project How to Display A Child’s Vintage Garment
To make the “flower”, I simply cut the embroidered portion off and then rolled it into a cone shape and placed it in the sugar mold. The crocheted edge makes it look like a flower , don’t you agree?
