Create an easy summer dough bowl centerpiece with flags, vintage baseballs, and nostalgic Americana touches. Perfect for Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the 4th of July.
If summer had a soundtrack, it would be the crack of a baseball, the hum of cicadas, and the soft flutter of a flag in the breeze. That’s exactly the feeling I wanted to capture when I styled this round cherry‑wood dough bowl — a piece that came from my mother’s collection and always brings a little bit of home into my decorating.
This simple patriotic centerpiece works beautifully for Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the 4th of July, and it’s one of those projects that looks charming without requiring a single trip to the store. If you have a dough bowl, a few flags, and anything with a hint of Americana nostalgia, you’re already halfway there.

Easy Summer Dough Bowl Centerpiece with Flags & Vintage Baseballs (Perfect for the 4th of July!)
Materials You’ll Need
- Round dough bowl (mine is vintage cherry wood)
- 3 small American flags
- Terra cotta saucer or small dish (to raise the flags)
- Vintage baseballs or softballs
- Navy or flag‑themed fabric, runner, or bandana
- Optional: flag holder, mini pennants, ribbon, or seasonal substitutions
Step 1: Start With a Soft Base Layer
I began by laying a piece of flag‑themed fabric on the table. This does two things:
- visually softens the arrangement of the wooden bowl on the table
- brings in that classic red‑white‑and‑blue palette without overwhelming the arrangement
Any navy, denim, ticking stripe, or bandana print will work beautifully here.

Step 2: Add Height With a Hidden Riser
To give the flags a little lift, I tucked a small terra cotta saucer into the center of the bowl. You can use anything:
- a ramekin
- a small bowl
- a stack of coasters
The goal is simply to raise the flags so they sit above the baseballs and create a natural focal point.
Step 3: Anchor the Flags
I placed three small American flags into a simple flag holder and set it on top of the saucer. If you don’t have a holder, just nestle the flag sticks into the baseballs — they’ll stay put surprisingly well.
Three flags feel balanced and intentional, but you can use one for a minimalist look or five for a more festive display.

Step 4: Fill the Bowl With Vintage Baseballs
This is where the charm really comes in. The worn stitching, the scuffs, the softened leather — it all adds that nostalgic, summer‑in‑America feeling.
If you don’t have vintage baseballs, try:
- softballs
- wiffle balls
- golf balls
- croquet balls
- wooden beads
Anything round and summery works.

Why This Centerpiece Works
- It’s nostalgic. Baseballs and flags instantly evoke summer memories.
- It’s inexpensive. Most of these items are things you already have.
- It’s adaptable. Works for Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the 4th of July.
- It’s kid‑friendly. Nothing fragile, nothing fussy.
- It’s personal. Using a family dough bowl adds meaning and warmth.

Other Centerpieces Featuring Flags & Baseballs
Here are a few examples of other centerpieces that I have made using flags & baseballs to celebrate the summer holidays!

What can I use If I don’t have a dough bowl?
Don’t fret if you don’t have a dough bowl! I used a galvanized hog feeder to make this 4th of July inspired display! I actually found it in the barn when I was back in Illinois working on cleaning out the homestead. More details about what I found in the barn can be found in this post: Look What We Found in the Barn!
I actually found some of those baseballs in the barn too! I was happy to find things to use in this centerpiece. I hadn’t planned to still be in Illinois over the 4th that year but things didn’t go quite like I planned! My 11 day trip turned into 45 days! Downsizing the family homestead and settling my parents’ estate was a long process!

Final Thoughts
Summer decorating doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple elements — a favorite bowl, a handful of baseballs, and a trio of flags — can create a centerpiece that feels warm, nostalgic, and perfectly seasonal.
