Create a cozy, summer friendly nook with light textiles, herbs, solar lanterns, and simple hygge touches. Easy ideas to refresh your outdoor space for the season.
Summer in Florida has its own rhythm — slower, softer, and a little more intentional. Instead of heavy décor or anything that adds heat, I like to create small, breathable spaces that feel calm and inviting. A nook where you can sip something cool, listen to the breeze, and enjoy a moment of quiet. Last week I shared what Summer Hygge looks like here in Florida, and today we’re taking the next step.
I’m sharing a few simple ways to bring a little summer hygge to your lanai or porch — all easy, all hot weather friendly, and all doable with things you probably already have.
Easy Summer Hygge Ideas for Your Lanai or Porch
Tip 1: Start With Shade + Airflow
Comfort comes first in a Florida summer. Before I add anything decorative, I make sure the space has good airflow and soft shade. A small fan, a sheer curtain panel, or even the natural shade from your home can make a world of difference. Summer hygge isn’t about adding layers — it’s about creating a place where you can actually relax.

Tip 2: Keep Textiles Light, Breathable, and Easy to Swap
Pillow covers are one of the easiest ways to shift a space from season to season — especially in Florida, where we want things to feel light and breathable. Instead of storing bulky pillows, I keep a small collection of covers that I can swap out depending on the mood or time of year. For summer, I reach for linen, cotton, and airy blends that don’t hold heat and still feel soft and inviting.
Using covers also lets you play with color without committing to a whole new set of pillows. A simple chambray blue, a soft white linen, or a subtle stripe can completely change the feel of a nook. And because they fold flat, they take up almost no storage space — a win for any Florida home.
I love using pillow covers to shift the mood from season to season — I even used this same approach in my autumn lanai refresh.

Tip 3: Add Plants + Herbs for Life, Scent, and Softness
One of the easiest ways to bring summer hygge into a nook is with plants and herbs. They add life, movement, and a sense of freshness that instantly softens the space. In Florida, so many plants thrive in the heat that it feels natural to let a little greenery spill into your lanai or porch.

You don’t need a full garden — even one or two small pots make a difference. A little mint or lemon balm adds a cooling scent when the breeze moves through, and rosemary brings that grounding, herbal note that feels calming at the end of a long day. Ferns, pothos, and palms also do beautifully in shaded outdoor spaces and add that lush, tropical softness without overwhelming the nook.

A single pot placed near the arm of a bench or tucked beside a tray creates depth and makes the whole space feel more alive. It’s a simple way to add texture and color while keeping everything light, breathable, and summer‑friendly.

Tip 4: Choose Summer‑Friendly Lighting
Candles are wonderful in the cooler months, but in summer — especially in Florida — I lean into solar lanterns and soft LED glow. They give you that cozy evening ambiance without adding heat. A small lantern on a tray instantly makes the space feel intentional and relaxing, and its completely hands‑off. It charges during the day and glows all evening.

Tip 5: Keep a Simple Summer Ritual
Summer hygge doesn’t need to be elaborate. Sometimes it’s just a quiet pause with something living and lovely right beside you. At the end of the day, my favorite summer ritual is the simplest one. Before I settle into the nook, I brush my hand across the herbs — the soft leaves of the scented geranium, the bright citrusy lemon balm, the grounding rosemary. The scent lifts instantly, and it’s such a small, calming reminder to slow down and breathe for a moment.

⭐ What Is a Lanai? (Florida‑Friendly Sidebar)
If you’re new to Florida living, a lanai is essentially an outdoor room — usually screened — that lets you enjoy the breeze without the bugs. It becomes a true extension of your living space. In the summer, it’s the perfect place to create a cozy nook that feels connected to nature but still comfortable in the heat.
Coming Up Next…
Next week I’ll be sharing the finished Summer Hygge nook — the soft linens, the breezy textures, and the cozy little corner that’s quickly becoming my favorite place to unwind. I can’t wait to show you how it all came together.
