Memories……

Farmhouse Front Porch Early Summer
The following Facebook memory popped up on my Facebook page on today.  It makes a great lead into today’s blog post.

Facebook Memory from 2-18-2019

The movers have loaded up the boxes and the furniture that made the cut.  Hopefully we will be reunited with our items in a little over two weeks.
Two gentlemen came from Paxton, Illinois today to check out the barn and workshop. They took the remaining Longaberger baskets with them for an upcoming consignment auction.  They found some treasures in the various buildings.  And some things will be going to a consignment auction in the spring and some things will be going into an auction we will have here at a later date.
They also found bottles of alcohol on the shelf in dad’s workshop. Probably from the days his wife and daughter drove him to seek refuge in his workshop!

Our Experience Using a Moving Company I Found Online

Moving Box with A hole made by a Rodent

I outlined how the move actually went in this blog post.

Of the three different professional movers I used to move things from Illinois to Florida, the first experience was by far the worst. Of the 9 pieces of furniture, they moved for us, they managed to damage 4 of them.

It was definitely a learning experience and I know now to always buy the additional insurance otherwise, if they damage an item they will only reimburse by the weight.  I ended up getting a check for something like $117.00 for all the damage that they did.

Paxton Pickers

While Paxton Pickers is not really the name of the company the two gentlemen that came to the farm that day to look at the “stuff”, I do like the alliteration of it!  Working with those two gentlemen worked out well however, I did end up not using their services for an on-site auction at the farm.  It ended up to not be feasible with the timetable I had, and I hadn’t figured in the actual advertising costs of the auction plus the commission on the items.

My favorite curbside find did go home with one of the guys.  I really miss this piece!

About that Alcohol

I was afraid to actually open the bottles and smell what was in there.  The bottles themselves were unique enough to warrant saving and I even considered having them melted down into a decorative piece.  Ultimately, I ended up just throwing them away!

Sometimes it seems much longer ago than four years ago and other times it seems like it was just yesterday!  Could be because four years later I am still not quite finished sorting & organizing……

Seventeen years ago today, I volunteered on the Ex Seventeen years ago today, I volunteered on the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build in Philo, Illinois — a day that still feels as vivid as ever.

From prepping pots at the shop to seeing the landscaping come together, to standing off to the side during the reveal… it was one of those rare experiences where community, generosity, and purpose all collide in the best possible way.

There’s a photo in here of me with Will and Debbie — two wonderful people who volunteered alongside me that day. Will always wore those sunglasses; I still can’t see the sunglasses emoji without thinking of him. Both have since passed, and that picture has become a little treasure from a day we shared together.

I added a few newly rediscovered photos to my blog post this year, and it reminded me how meaningful it was to be part of something hopeful and lasting.

I pulled together this simple patriotic vignette with vintage touches, soft blues, and a few gentle pops of red. It’s amazing how a little fabric, a postcard, and a favorite finial can turn into something sweet for summer.

If you love soft Americana style, this one’s for you. ❤️🤍💙
