Give an old wingback chair a fresh new look without reupholstering. See how I used a ready-made slipcover designed for a T-cushion chair and made it work on my standard wingback chair
I have always loved the classic shape of wingback chairs, but the original upholstery on this one had definitely seen better days. The dark green fabric felt dated, and I wasn’t ready to invest in professional reupholstery.
Instead, I decided to try a ready-made slipcover.
The funny part? The slipcover I purchased was actually designed for a wingback chair with a T-cushion seat. My chair has a standard box cushion, so I wasn’t sure it would work. After a little tugging, tucking, and adjusting, I was able to make it fit well enough to completely change the look of the chair.
Was it a custom upholstered fit? No.
Did it give my old chair a fresh cottage-style look for a fraction of the cost of reupholstery? Absolutely.

The Slipcover Solution
I chose a ready-made wingback slipcover in an off-white color. Although it was designed for a T-cushion chair, I decided to see if I could make it work on my standard-cushion wingback. While my slipcover is currently sold out on Amazon, similar slipcovers can be found here – White Wingback Chair Slipcover
After pulling the cover into place and adjusting the excess fabric, the transformation was already obvious.

The After
The finished chair has a much softer cottage-style appearance. The fit isn’t as tailored as custom upholstery, but for a quick and inexpensive update, I was pleased with the results.
One of the things I like most about using slipcovers is that they allow you to experiment with a different look without making a permanent commitment.
Adding a decorative pillow helped complete the transformation and gave the chair a cozy place to sit and read.

Final Thoughts
If you’ve been considering reupholstering an older wingback chair, don’t overlook the possibility of a ready-made slipcover. Even if your chair isn’t exactly the same shape the slipcover was designed for, you may be able to make it work with a little adjusting.
This simple update gave my old green wingback chair a completely different look without the cost or effort of a full upholstery project. I love how easy it is to change the look of the chair with the addition of a throw pillow.
