Can you believe the 4th of July is right around the corner — and that the year is flying by so quickly? I know I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it. This summer has looked a little different for me, and I haven’t been able to do quite as much decorating or celebrating as I usually do because I’ve been navigating a handful of health challenges. Even so, I still wanted to bring a little Red, White & Blue joy into our home. If you’d like to see the full patriotic tour from a previous year — when I was able to go all out — you can take a look here: Celebrate the Spirit of Independence Day.
A Look Back At 4th of July Celebrations Past
July always brings a quiet wave of gratitude for the memories, traditions, and simple joys that shaped my love for America. Every year, I find myself thinking about the people who poured into my life, the places that left their mark, and the small moments that still make me smile. This season feels like an invitation to pause, remember, and celebrate the beautiful threads of heritage and hope woven through our stories.
My 4th of July refections always include some thyme thinking about 4th of July celebration memories that involved my parents. One of my favorites is when my Mom was honored in parade for all her community activities. She was active in so many organizations. She really loved her country!

Celebrate the Red, the White and the Blue
Another memory involves the first time I made this Red, White & Blue Salad! I made it for a 4th of July cookout we were having with my parents and another family friend. My first try was a little crooked, but it was still very delicious!

And of course, the many parades I marched in twirling my baton!

As well as participating in a talent show for the country’s 200th birthday!

As I look back on the July celebrations of the past, I’m reminded that the heart of Independence Day isn’t just the flags, the parades, or the décor — it’s the gratitude for the people who shaped us and the quiet ways God stitches meaning into our memories. The older I get, the more I treasure those simple moments: the laughter, the familiar traditions, and the sense of belonging that comes from remembering where we come from. These are the blessings that make this season feel so special.
Now that I am all filled up with nostalgia, let’s get to decorating!

The Marble Topped Chest
Simply moving a few pieces of furniture around can give your home a new look. By moving this chest to our dining room, I gained access to some additional storage options as well.
Before-

The marble topped chest of drawers was my paternal grandfather’s. It is a great place to store matches and candles in case of a power outage. I also store extra batteries for the battery operated candles. The bottom area offers a place to store candle holders and some vintage glasses that belonged to my grandmother. Incorporating family pieces is a main stay of heritage patriotic home decor.
This is obviously an old picture of the chest of drawers. The corner cabinet that you can see reflected in the mirror was re-painted and now looks like this:

Tips for a Beautifully Decorated Hutch
The oak framed mirror leaning on top of the chest was something my Mother found at an antique store in Rabbit Hash, KY many years ago. Where is Rabbit Hash you ask? It is a small town along the banks of the Ohio River. My parents and I as well as some girls from the office I worked at at the time took a trip to Rabbit Hash on year over the Labor Day holiday. To learn more about Rabbit Hash and our day trip, please see The Story Behind the Mirror

A Final Note –
As we step into another Fourth of July, I’m reminded that celebrating America isn’t just about the decorations or the traditions — it’s about honoring the memories, the people, and the quiet moments that shape our lives. Even in a summer where I haven’t been able to do quite as much as usual, there’s still beauty in the small things and gratitude in the familiar rhythms of home. That’s what I hope you feel here — a simple, heartfelt celebration of the season, created in the spirit of A Life Styled With Heart.
