To create this simple centerpiece, you will need:

  1. a container
  2. assorted blooming plants
  3. terra cotta pots & pot covers

Selecting the Perfect Container for Your Potted Plant Centerpiece

The choice of container for your blooming potted plant centerpiece is just as important as the plants themselves. The container can enhance or detract from the overall visual impact of your centerpiece. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when selecting the perfect container:

  1. Material: The material of the container can set the tone for your centerpiece. For a more rustic or natural look, opt for containers made of terracotta or wood. If you prefer a sleek and modern aesthetic, choose containers made of glass or ceramic. Remember to ensure that the container has proper drainage to prevent water accumulation.
  1. Size and Shape: The size and shape of the container should complement the size and shape of the plants. Avoid containers that are too small or too large for the plants, as it can disrupt the overall balance. Consider using a mix of containers in varying sizes and shapes to create an interesting and dynamic centerpiece.
  1. Color: The color of the container can either blend in or stand out, depending on your preference. Neutral-colored containers, such as white or black, can create a clean and minimalist look. On the other hand, brightly colored containers can add a pop of color and create a more vibrant centerpiece. Consider the color scheme of your dining area and choose containers that complement the overall decor.
  1. Texture: The texture of the container can add visual interest to your centerpiece. Textured containers, such as those with a woven or embossed surface, can create a unique and eye-catching focal point. Alternatively, smooth and glossy containers can provide a sleek and polished look. Choose a texture that aligns with the overall style and theme of your dining area.

By carefully selecting the right container, you can elevate the visual impact of your potted plant centerpiece and create a cohesive and captivating table decor.

I have a variety of carriers, baskets and containers to choose from.  For this centerpiece, I decided to use a cream colored metal garden carrier.

Types of potted plants suitable for centerpieces

When it comes to selecting potted plants for your centerpiece, there are countless options to choose from. The key is to choose plants that not only fit your aesthetic preferences but can also thrive in an indoor environment. If you are making the centerpiece for a one time event, it isn’t as important that the plants be able to live indoors.

I am designing this potted plant centerpiece for Easter and I plan to give the plants to my quests at the end of our celebration.  With this in mind, I picked out easy care, blooming annuals that I found at a plant sale.

Listed below are several more choices that can work well in a centerpiece.

  1. Succulents: Succulents are trendy, low-maintenance plants that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are known for their ability to store water in their leaves, making them perfect for those who tend to forget to water their plants regularly. Succulents can add a modern and minimalist touch to your table decor, and they are available in an array of colors, including shades of green, purple, and even blue.
  2. Herbs: Incorporating herbs into your centerpiece not only adds a refreshing aroma to your table but also provides an opportunity to use them in your cooking. Popular herb choices include rosemary, thyme, basil, and mint. These plants are not only visually appealing but also functional, allowing you to snip a few leaves to enhance the flavors of your dishes.
  3. Orchids: Orchids are elegant and sophisticated plants that make stunning centerpieces. With their delicate flowers and long-lasting blooms, they add a touch of luxury to any table. Orchids come in a variety of colors, including white, pink, purple, and yellow, allowing you to create a centerpiece that matches your color scheme.
  4. Bromeliads: Bromeliads are tropical plants known for their vibrant colors and unique shapes. They make eye-catching centerpieces, especially when grouped together. Bromeliads thrive in bright, indirect light and can add a tropical flair to your table decor.

When selecting potted plants, consider the lighting conditions of your space, as well as the maintenance requirements of each plant. It’s essential to choose plants that can thrive in the environment where you plan to display them. By selecting the right plants, you can ensure that your potted plant centerpiece remains vibrant and beautiful for an extended period.

Choosing the Right Size and Shape of Potted Plants

When it comes to selecting the right potted plants for your centerpiece, size and shape play a crucial role. The size of the plants should complement the size of your table and the overall space. Too small or too large plants can throw off the balance and visual appeal of the centerpiece. When making a centerpiece featuring potted plants, I normally use plants that are in 4 1/2 inch containers or 6 inch containers.

Consider the height of the plants as well. Opt for taller plants if you want to create a statement centerpiece that draws attention. However, if you prefer a more subtle look, choose shorter plants that allow for easy conversation across the table.

Choose plants with different shapes and foliage to create an interesting and visually appealing composition. Mixing plants with round leaves, spiky leaves, or cascading vines can add depth and texture to your centerpiece.  I often use the thriller/filler/ spiller method of designing a potted plant centerpiece.  More about this technique can be found in this post: Red & White European Dish Garden

If you are planning to leave the centerpiece in the house for an extended period of time, remember to consider the lighting conditions of your dining area. If your table is placed in a well-lit area, choose plants that can thrive in bright light. On the other hand, if your table is in a dimly lit space, opt for plants that can tolerate lower light levels. Taking these factors into account will ensure that your potted plant centerpiece thrives in its environment.

How To Disguise The Grower’s Pot

Since I am going to be sending the individual potted plants home with my quests, I need a way to cover the plastic pot (or grower’s pot) that the plant is in.  I decided to use a combination of terra cotta pots and speed covers.  Speed covers are decorative sleeves that are either made of foil or a coated paper. An example is shown below.  The dianthus plants are in speed covers.

To cover the geraniums’ plastic pots, I simply placed them in a 4 1/2 terra cotta flower pot.

Why use potted plants as centerpieces

Potted plants make fantastic centerpieces for several reasons. They bring a natural element to your table, creating a sense of tranquility and beauty. Unlike cut flowers, potted plants have a longer lifespan, allowing you to enjoy their presence for an extended period. Or they can easily be sent home with your guests a favors.  Additionally, potted plants are low-maintenance, making them an ideal choice for those with busy schedules or a less-than-green thumb. They require minimal watering and care, ensuring they stay fresh and vibrant throughout your event. Potted plants come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing you to customize your centerpiece to match any theme or occasion. Whether you’re hosting a formal dinner party or a casual gathering, potted plant centerpieces are versatile enough to suit any setting.

Potted plants also offer the opportunity to bring the outdoors in, especially for those in urban areas or with limited access to green spaces. The presence of plants has been proven to provide a calming effect and improve overall well-being. Having a potted plant centerpiece on your table can create a serene and inviting atmosphere, making your guests feel more relaxed and connected to nature. So, if you want to infuse your dining experience with a touch of natural beauty and positive energy, potted plant centerpieces are a perfect choice.

Potted Plant Centerpiece Inspiration for Different Occasions

Potted plant centerpieces are versatile and can be tailored to suit various occasions. Whether you’re hosting a wedding, throwing a party, or celebrating a holiday, here are some inspiration ideas to help you create the perfect centerpiece:

  1. Weddings

Weddings are a perfect occasion to showcase the elegance and beauty of potted plant centerpieces. Opt for romantic flowers, such as roses or orchids, planted in decorative containers. Mix different varieties of plants to create a lush and abundant centerpiece. You can also incorporate candles or fairy lights to add a touch of romance and create a cozy ambiance.

  1. Parties

For parties, you can choose potted plants that reflect the theme or mood of the event. For a tropical-themed party, opt for vibrant and exotic plants, such as bromeliads or bird of paradise. If you’re hosting a garden party, select flowering plants in a variety of colors to create a lively and festive atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to get creative and mix and match different plants and containers to create a visually striking centerpiece.

  1. Holidays

During the holiday season, potted plant centerpieces can add a festive touch to your table decor. For Christmas, consider using poinsettias, holly, or miniature Christmas trees in decorative containers. You can also incorporate ornaments, ribbons, or string lights to enhance the holiday spirit. During Easter, opt for spring flowers, such as tulips or daffodils, to create a fresh and colorful centerpiece.

No matter the occasion, potted plant centerpieces offer endless possibilities to showcase your creativity and create a memorable table decor.

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
