What Is Summer Hygge? A Gentle Guide to Cozy Living in the Heat

May 7, 2026 by Kimberly Snyder Leave a Comment

Spread the love

Hygge isn’t just for winter. Summer has its own softer, breezier version of cozy living — one filled with sunlight, simple pleasures, and easy moments of comfort. Today I’m sharing what Summer Hygge is and how to bring more of it into your everyday life.

When most people hear the word hygge, they picture winter: candles glowing, blankets piled high, mugs of something warm. But hygge isn’t really about cold weather at all. It’s about comfort, presence, and simple pleasures — and those things absolutely belong in summer, too.

In fact, summer hygge might be my favorite version. It’s lighter. It’s breezier. It’s slower in the best possible way.

And here in Florida, where summer arrives early and stays late, learning how to create a sense of cozy calm in the heat becomes its own kind of gentle art.

Today I’m sharing a soft introduction to Summer Hygge — what it is, what it isn’t, and how you can bring more of it into your everyday life.

So… What Is Summer Hygge?

At its heart, hygge is about:

  • savoring small moments
  • creating comfort through simplicity
  • noticing beauty in the everyday
  • slowing down enough to actually enjoy your space

In summer, that feeling shifts into something warm and sunlit. Think:

  • iced tea in a glass that sweats just a little
  • herbs clipped from the garden and tucked into a jar
  • soft lighting on the porch as the day cools
  • bare feet on tile or weathered wood
  • a quiet morning before the heat settles in

Speaking of iced tea, I share a delicious herb flavored iced tea in this post.  It is the perfect thing to sip while enjoying your hygge Summer retreat.

Summer hygge is light-filled coziness — the kind that makes you exhale.

What Summer Hygge Is Not

Let’s clear this up, because it helps set the tone.

Summer hygge is not:

  • heavy blankets
  • dark colors
  • cluttered surfaces
  • candles burning in every corner
  • anything that feels stuffy or fussy

It’s not winter coziness transplanted into July. It’s a softer, airier version — one that feels effortless and breathable.

Easy Ways to Add Summer Hygge to Your Home

You don’t need to overhaul anything. Hygge is about small shifts that make your space feel more inviting.

  • Here are a few simple ideas:

    • Bring in natural textures — terracotta, woven baskets, driftwood, linen, cotton.
    • Keep a jar of herbs nearby — rosemary, basil, mint… whatever you have growing.
    • Create a simple beverage ritual — iced tea, citrus water, or a favorite summer drink.
    • Use soft, breezy textiles — lightweight throws, washable pillows, airy curtains.
    • Add gentle lighting — solar lanterns, string lights, battery candles.
    • Make a tiny moment for yourself — a morning nook, a sunset seat, a shady corner.
    • Let nature be the décor — palms, succulents, shells, flowers, sunlight.

    Florida-Friendly Hygge

Living in Florida (or anywhere where the summers are hot & humid) means embracing:

    • humidity
    • bright sun
    • afternoon storms
    • early mornings and golden evenings

Summer hygge here is all about shade, airflow, and softness.

Our lanais or other outdoor living spaces become the heart of summer living — a place where breezes move through, plants thrive, and the world slows down just enough to enjoy it.

This is where my own Summer Hygge project is taking shape.

For an easy, Florida‑friendly idea, here’s my little herbs‑in‑a‑basket project — it’s a sweet way to add greenery without a lot of fuss.
