My Favorite Roadside Find!

August 10, 2025 by Kimberly Snyder 4 Comments

Spread the love

Ever been driving along & noticed an amazing piece of furniture? Did you think “did they really mean to put this out with the trash?” I have!

My Favorite Curbside Find!

This happened several years ago but I thought my readers might enjoy and relate to it!

While I was driving to pick up lunch one day, I saw this amazing piece of primitive furniture. It had been set out on the boulevard for the upcoming town wide clean up day.  I couldn’t believe that someone would actually throw this away.

Since I knew whose house it was, I called him up and said ” Pat, do you know there is an incredible base cabinet sitting on the boulevard?  Is it suppose to be there?”  He said he knew it was there, he put it out for the trash people to pick up.  I asked if I could have it and he said sure.  I am sure that he was rolling his eyes while talking to me!  It was really too heavy for me to lift myself so I called my Mom’s handyman and asked him to meet me in town so he could help me load it.

I didn’t have room for it in the house at the time , so we left it on the porch until I could get it cleaned up and make room for it in the living room.  It was a few months before I had thyme to clean it up.

At the time, I wasn’t a very good painter.  I preferred to scrub , maybe sand it a bit, and call it a day.  If a piece required much more than a good scrubbing with Murphy’s Oil soap or something similar, I probably wasn’t going to deal with it.  I just didn’t have the patience to wait for the paint to dry!  Since moving to Florida, I have learned how to paint with chalk paint.  More about that a bit later!

I do enjoy using spray paint!  I have successfully used spray paint to refresh several things including this side table:

Back to the primitive cabinet…..

Just in thyme for Thanksgiving that year, I was ready to put it in the living room.  My husband was not a fan.  He doesn’t quite share my love of the shabby, rusty , and unique items.  We eventually drilled holes in the cabinet in order to set up the stereo/cd system.

When it came time to start deciding which pieces were going to be able to go to Florida with us, unfortunately this one did not make the cut.  It was really too big and bulky for the house we were moving into.  It might have worked on the lanai for storage but the humidity in Florida is really hard on wood.  I ended up selling it to one of the pickers that came out to the farm.

Another Curbside Find!

Town Clean Up Day in Bement, Il was a great thyme to pick up treasures off the curb!  I also found this old seed box one year!  It was a great way to display items in my former flower shop!

I also found some shutters in a trash can after an antique/craft fair event!  It didn’t take me long to pull them out of that can and pack them in my truck!  Of course, I had to do it without Mr Farmhouse (Dave) seeing me! I can’t find a picture of them right now but when I come across it, I will add it!

Happy Roadside Shopping!
