Tulip Ornaments
These tulips ornaments look like they are wood, but they are actually resin! I found them on clearance. One of the ways I thought I could use them was to “plant” them into a 2 1/2 in terra cotta pot and use them to decorate my sugar mold for Spring! Let me show you how I “planted” these adorable tulip ornaments!
6 Hole Sugar Mold with Terra Cotta pots in a Stand
.
This sugar mold is a reproduction piece. Sugar used to be sold to consumers in cone shapes. This was before granulated sugar came on the market. Now they are used as fun, home decor pieces. While the sugar mold will stand on its own, the wrought iron stand is a useful accent to the piece. It gives the sugar mold a little more height and adds stability in case the final creation is top heavy.
Sugar molds come in all different sizes. I have two 6-hole ones (one white, one natural), a 3 hole one and one that just has one hole. For this project, I chose to use my natural colored 6-hole sugar mold. I highlighted my white one in this project.
How to Decorate a Sugar Mold for Spring
Let’s Get Planting!
The make the “soil” I used a Styrofoam ball that was covered with faux moss. If you don’t have one like this, you can use a plain white Styrofoam ball and either cover it with sheet moss or simply spray it with green spray paint. I used three moss balls and cut them in half so that I had 6 pieces of “soil”.
I used a hack saw blade to make my cuts but a sharp regular knife would work also. I did need to trim a little off around the edges to get the “soil” to fit into my terra cotta pots.
The Tulips
To make the stem for the tulips, I used a wooden pick. You could use a stick from the yard instead. To attach the stem to the tulip, I used pieces of Velcro. If you prefer, you could use hot glue or even duct tape. Since I planned to use the sugar mold in front of a backdrop, I left the back side unfinished. If you plan to use the sugar mold where the front and the back will be seen, you could add a second tulip ornament to the back so that it was double sided. Another idea would be to cover your mechanics with pink tissue paper or construction paper.
Add A Touch of Whimsey With Pink Wire
Using wire snips, I cut small pieces of wire and then made a circle with my needle nose pliers. The picture above shows how to make the circle by tightly holding the end and then twisting into a circle.
Two Tiny Succulent Pots
To fill the pots on each end, I added two small faux succulents to each pot. I felt 4 tulips made a nice display and the tiny succulent pots added a nice finishing touch.
