Walking Tacos: The Perfect Budget Friendly Party Food!

June 15, 2023 by Kimberly Snyder 12 Comments

Spread the love

Searching for a fun and easy to prepare party food? Walking Tacos are the answer! Here’s why they are a hit with guests of all ages!

Looking for a budget friendly, yet fun and easy main dish to serve at your next outdoor event?  Why not try making walking tacos?  Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, a tailgate party, or a camping trip, walking tacos are the perfect addition to your menu. Walking tacos are a unique twist on traditional tacos.  This delicious entree is sure to impress your friends & family.

Instead of serving tacos on a plate, your guests can create their own taco in a bag of corn chips. This not only adds a fun element to the party, but it also makes clean-up a breeze.  Guests can easily customize their walking tacos with their favorite toppings.

Walking Tacos are a budget friendly option for your party for several reasons! They are basically taco salad in a bag so you have your salad and main dish combined in one menu option.  They are eaten straight out of the bag so no need for extra plates.  The bags are disposable so there is less clean up involved.  Since people can customize their walking tacos to their own liking, there should be less food waste as well.

Let me share a few more details about this tasty and unique dish – well “bag” in this case!!!

Why Walking Tacos?

Reasons Why Walking Tacos Are the Perfect Party Food

If you’re planning a celebration and want to serve something different yet budget friendly, you should consider walking tacos. This portable made to order main dish will be a hit with guests of all ages.  This type of taco is easy to prepare and to serve. Simply cook the ground beef (or ground turkey or even tofu), chop up the toppings, and let your guests assemble their own tacos. This not only saves you time but also allows your guests to customize their tacos to their liking.  What’s not to like?

Customizable for all tastes

One of the best things about walking tacos is that they can be customized to suit any taste. Guests can choose their own toppings and ingredients, making each walking taco unique and personalized. From classic taco toppings like cheese, lettuce, and salsa, to more adventurous options like avocado, jalapenos, and hot sauce, there’s something for everyone. Plus, guests can control the amount of  heat in their walking taco, making it a great option for those with different levels of spice tolerance.

Heat is another word for spiciness. The Scoville Scale rates peppers from zero SHU (no heat at all) to SHU’s in the millions. Bell peppers have a Scoville Scale of 0.  The hottest peppers include ghost peppers which have a SHU of one million.

Jalapeno peppers have a SHU ranging from 2500 to 8000.  Growing conditions as well as how ripe the jalapeno is, can effect the SHU.

Easy to prepare and serve

Another benefit of walking tacos is that they are portable and easy to eat. Unlike traditional tacos that require a plate and utensils, walking tacos can be eaten straight out of the bag. Your guests just grab a bag of chips, crush them up, add the meat and their choice of  toppings, and mix it all together in the bag. The walking tacos can be eaten straight out of the bag with a fork or spoon!

It is easy to set up a taco bar with all the toppings and let guests create their own walking tacos. This not only saves you time and effort in the kitchen, but it also adds an interactive element to your party that guests will love.

Minimal clean-up required

One of the best things about walking tacos is that they require minimal clean-up. Since the ingredients are served in individual bags of corn chips, there are no plates or bowls to wash. Guests can simply toss their empty bags in the trash and you’re done! This makes walking tacos a great option for outdoor parties, picnics, and other events where you may not have access to a lot of cleaning supplies.

Easy Party Menu

Perfect for outdoor events

Walking tacos are the perfect outdoor party food !  Since they are served in individual bags of corn chips, they are easy to transport and don’t require any plates.  All you need is a fork!  This makes them a great option for picnics, barbecues, and other outdoor gatherings. Plus, guests can customize their tacos to their liking, making them a crowd-pleaser for guests of all ages.

All you really need to complete your party menu is something for dessert and a few cold beverages.  To keep things simple, why not serve watermelon slices on popsicle sticks?

In addition to your walking taco ingredients & watermelon slices served on popsicle sticks, all you will need are forks or spoons and napkins!  Lots of napkins!

How to Create Walking Tacos

Gather Your Ingredients

The first step in making walking tacos is to gather your ingredients. You will need small bags of corn chips, ground beef or turkey, taco seasoning, shredded cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, and any other toppings you desire such as sour cream, guacamole, or salsa. Make sure to have enough for each guest to make their own walking taco.

Prepare the Meat/Protein Source

To start making your taco filling, cook the ground beef or turkey in a skillet over medium-high heat until it is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease from the meat and add the taco seasoning according to the package instructions. Stir the seasoning into the meat until it is fully coated and set it aside. This will be the main filling for your walking tacos.  Black Beans or tofu can also serve as the protein source for the walking tacos.

Set Up Your Toppings Bar

Once you have your cooked meat ready, it’s time to set up your toppings bar. This is where your guests can customize their walking tacos to their liking. Some popular toppings include shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, and salsa. You can also offer additional options like jalapenos, black beans, or guacamole. Arrange all of your toppings in separate bowls or containers so that guests can easily access them.

Assemble the Walking Tacos

To assemble the tacos, start by opening a bag of  individual-sized bag of corn chips. Crush the chips slightly to make room for the toppings. Then, add a spoonful of the cooked meat to the bag, followed by the desired toppings. Use a fork or spoon to mix everything together in the bag. Your guests can then eat the walking taco straight out of the bag with a fork or spoon. Repeat the process for each guest and enjoy!

Enjoy Your Delicious Party Food!

Now that you’ve learned how to make walking tacos, it’s time to enjoy them with your friends and family! This fun and easy party food is sure to be a hit at any gathering.  Walking tacos are a crowd-pleaser that appeal to people of all ages. The children will love the novelty of eating out of a bag, while the adults will appreciate the convenience and flavor of the dish. Plus, since everyone can make their own taco, it’s a great way to accommodate different dietary needs and preferences.

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
