The Farmhouse in Illinois – How it Looked in 2019

An American Foursquare Farmhouse

Live the Vintage Charm of Yesteryear in Rural Champaign County! This American Foursquare Farmhouse (3100+ sq ft) sits on 4.35 surveyed acres. With 9 Outbuildings and a second home situated on the property, this rural farm has enough room for a business, hobby farm, livestock or just room to roam. Farmhouse has newer addition with wood burning fireplace open to eat-in kitchen and newer bath featuring garden tub and shower. Four built-in cabinets in Dining Room. Spacious Living Room with hardwood floors. French doors lead you to first floor Master Bedroom and adjacent office or dressing room. Home retains the splendor of the original woodwork with functional transoms, rosette mouldings, Built-ins, tall windows allowing for plenty of sunlight throughout the house and hardwood flooring under carpet.

In July 2019, we finally had both houses on the property ready to put on the market.  The farmhouse was built in 1893.  My grandfather purchased the property in 1942. Between 1942 and 1949, other family members lived in the house.  My parents moved in in 1949 .  They lived in the farmhouse until June 2001 when they moved into the modular house in the back and my husband, Dave and I moved into the farmhouse.  The house has 7 bedrooms and 2 full baths.

Life in the Country

In the country, it is normal to use the side door as the regular way to enter one’s home.  Very rarely did we use the front door.  The side door was closer to the driveway and the various outbuildings my father would use when he was still farming.  It was more convenient to enter from the side.

This entry way was actually added onto the house in 1993 when a new bathroom was also added.  Prior to 1993, there was a screened in porch that ran along the west side of the house.

The First Floor

The bathroom that was added in 1993 is behind the door to the right of the mirror.  In order to have a door that matched the rest of the downstairs, this door was taken from one of the upstairs back bedrooms.

My parents added the fireplace in 1976 when they replaced the existing kitchen with a new kitchen addition.  The new kitchen was added where there used to be a summer kitchen.  The room where the fireplace is now is where the kitchen was when I was growing up.  There were 6 doors leading out of the kitchen and very little wall or counter space.

The dining room.

The dining room table and one of the cabinets.  The floor is vinyl laminate in this room.  The original hardwood floors were damaged and had to be replaced. There were pocket doors between the dining room and the living room.  I believe that the doors are still in the walls.

The living room.  Hardwood floor that I believe was installed in 1942.  I don’t believe this floor is original to the house.

The French doors lead into a bedroom that we used as our office.

The master bedroom

The 2nd Floor

The upstairs hallway. There are 5 rooms upstairs.  4 of them are approximately the same size.  The room at the end of the hallway is a lot larger and has two closets in it.  One of the closets could work as a nursery or small office.

One of the bedrooms upstairs.  The windows overlook the patio and fish pond.

This area would be a cute nursery or office.  It was used as storage when my parents lived there.

The barn .

[…] Some of the wood was used for various projects over the years.  Most of it was still stored in the barn when I finally got ready to clean out the barn.  You can read more about cleaning out the barn here […]
