Let’s Get Started
I often find inspiration for a tablescape or vignette by walking through our house and seeing something I had forgotten I had. I call this process “shop your home”. The theme for this “Spread Love” tablescape came from two items I already had. The sign below is something that I had purchased a couple of years ago when I was getting the Illinois farmhouse ready to go on the market. More about that process can be found in a series of posts titled Thyme to Let Go : How I Downsized the Family Homestead Part 1
Since moving to Florida, the sign has been in the guest bedroom. I recently added the yellow & white ceramic basket and Polish pottery flower stems in anticipation of a Spring project I will be working on. Stay tuned for more info on that!
The other piece of inspiration was this box of Christmas cards! The cards were sent several years ago but the sweet snowman “spoke” to me so I kept the box! I come from a long line of “keepers”. My husband calls us hoarders but we really just like our stuff!
The way the snowman is holding the garland of hearts looks like he is “Spreading Love”, doesn’t it?
Gather More Items
Once I had my theme, the next step is to choose the color palette. Since this is a Valentine’s Day display, I decided to stick with the traditional Valentine colors of pink, red and white. I did add a few pops of green to tie in the colors of the snowman box.
What Says Love More than Hearts?
We have to have hearts and lots of them in our Valentine’s Day tablescape! I gathered several different kinds of hearts. The heart garland and the rattan heart shaped bowl fillers add texture and interest to the display.
The metal heart boxes work well in a lot of different displays. I found them in a shop in Illinois when I was back “home” trying to finalize the sale of the farmhouse house. You might recognize them from the display pictured below. For this vignette, I placed several stems of fresh lilacs in an old blue Mason jar. I used a mercury glass tray to display the lilacs. The two metal heart boxes accent the display. If you are interested, more details can be found here:Farmhouse Fireplace Staged for Late Spring
Add a Living Plant
I just couldn’t resist adding this pot of heart shaped hoyas! They were perfect for the display!
Hoyas are succulents. They only need to be watered when they are dry. They are just so cute! Also in this display is a small wooden heart shaped bowl with the word “herbs” painted on it. I have had this forever! It is a reminder of how my entrepreneurial journey got started! My story is found here: Sprout/ Grow/ Bloom ; My Journey

More of My Favorite Tablescape Elements
If you have been following me for a bit, you already know that I love dough bowls! I love working them into my displays. I used this white , reproduction dough bowl standing behind the spindles. I fell in love with the shape of it. I do wish it was a little bit deeper and a tad longer. It is so cute and I just love the “wings”.
Snowflake Wishes & Gingerbread Kisses Holiday Dough Bowl
To add texture and help lift the items in the dough bowl, I used the piece of “ribbon” pictured below. The strip of webbing is actually excess “fabric” that I cut off of a piece of non skid rug pad! I thought it might come in handy! Which is one of the many reasons my husband thinks I might be a hoarder! He doesn’t see things the way I do!
After placing the ribbon in the bottom of the dough bowl, I added the metal boxes and then feathered in the rattan hearts. The wooden heart garland is propped up in front of the bowl. A few more rattan hearts are sprinkled in around the edges of the bowl.
Since hearts aren’t just for Valentine’s Day, I can use the rattan hearts in other displays throughout the year.

Can’t forget the Architectural Salvage Pieces!
I love using architectural salvage pieces in my tablescapes! The skeleton keys, the small pieces of gingerbread and the two pillars work well in this display. The wooden grate in the background is actually an old floor grate. More ideas on using architectural salvage can be found here: Spring Refresh using Architectural Salvage
