Let’s get started!
Simple Steps for a Quick Sofa Refresh
In order to create a different looks for my furniture, I have used slipcovers, drop cloths, sheets and even large pieces of fabric. Today, I am going to share my tips on using a fitted slipcover.
Before:
Two matching sofas came with the purchase of our Florida home. While very comfortable, they didn’t quite have the look I was going for! While peach is one of my favorite colors, I felt the peachy orange sofas were a bit too heavy looking.
Instead of replacing them with a new couch, I simply grabbed my tape measure!
Step 1 – measure your couch.
In order to determine what size slipcover you will need, you will want to measure the length, width, and height of your piece of furniture. Be very accurate when taking the measurements. Accurate measurements will help you get the end look that you desire!
Step 2 – Choose the correct size and material for your slipcover
Ready made slipcovers are available in a variety of fabrics. You can choose from 100% cotton, linen, twill, as well as polyester blends. Just be sure to pick a fabric that can withstand wear and tear. I picked out a cotton fabric that could be easily washed and dried. Our little dog, Gracie likes to sit on the couch! She is waiting patiently on the floor for me to finish putting on the new slipcovers!
Back to business…..
Be sure to check the label of the slipcover to ensure it fits your couch perfectly. I always double check the measurements when ordering slipcovers.
I ordered my slipcover directly from Sure Fit. The link below is similar Sure Fit slipcover that is available on Amazon. There are many options available. I have had really good luck with the Sure Fit brand.
Step 3 – Slipcovers arrive! Let’s put them on!
Once the slipcovers arrived, I was ready to put them on the couch!
The slipcover comes with a label that helps you locate the front of the slipcover. This helps while you are trying to fit the slipcover onto the sofa.
Once you locate the tag, drape the slipcover over the sofa. Start by draping the cover over the back of the sofa and then pull the material over the sofa. Follow the shape of your sofa and adjust the slipcover over the arms. Continue adjusting the slipcover until it is even on all four sides.
This picture shows the pillows arranged along the back of the sofa.
Any excess fabric can be tucked into the creases of the sofa. Continue to tuck and smooth until you are happy with the look.
I was quickly finished with putting the slipcover on. Now for the final step!
Step 4 – Add a few decorative pillows
Once the slipcover is in place, its thyme to add a few decorative throw pillows. To make the space even more cozy, add an afghan or blanket for the chilly nights.
I have had these flag pillows for quite awhile. My youngest bonus son actually rescued them from the trash several years ago when his mother was moving. I usually get them out around President’s day and then use them until Autumn.
I have started using pillow covers instead of purchasing new seasonal pillows. A pillow cover is similar to a pillowcase for an accent pillow. It is easy to cover a pillow insert with a seasonally appropriate pillow cover. Using pillow covers makes storing them a lot easier as well! They can be folded and placed in a drawer or tote until it is thyme to get them out for the season. For more information about the benefits of pillow covers, please see More Summerthyme on the Lanai
One Last Look!
Since we live in Florida, I am ok with the wrinkles on the slipcover. If the wrinkles bother you, simply steam out the wrinkles before putting the slipcover on.
