Before we really get started:
As a special treat this week, I am joining a group of bloggers for a Fall Home Tour! The links to today’s participants can be found near the bottom of this post! A big Thank you to Marty from A Stroll Thru Life for organizing this Fall Home Tour!
No matter how you arrived here today, I am so glad you are here! My name is Kimberly and I have a passion for flowers (a former florist) and flour (a former pizzeria owner) and many things in between! Especially rusty and chippy items!
Start with a Plan
The first step is to look at your outdoor space. Whether you have a porch or perhaps just a concrete pad, you will want to study your space to determine how much room you actually have for decorations.
This type of planning will help you avoid spending money on items you ultimately won’t have room for. Once you know how much space you have, it is thyme to look for inspiration on how to fill that space. A great resource is Pinterest. There are so many great creators on Pinterest. You will find a lot of DIY projects there that you can adapt to fit your needs. I keep a secret board or two for inspiration for projects that I want to work on!
Choose a Color Scheme
Once you know how much space you have and have a general idea of how you want the finished area to look, it is thyme to choose a color scheme. Color schemes for Autumn and Fall are fairly easy. Think about what colors complement each other and contrast with others. The color scheme for this front door area is shades of orange with accents of buffalo plaid.
The focal point of the front door is a wreath with a beautiful burlap bow. The burlap bow ties into the sisal doormat. If you prefer, you could use a buffalo check pattern bow to help bring out the buffalo check in the rag rug.
If you prefer a more monochromatic color scheme, this post shows a primarily white or cream theme.
Create a Budget
With the cost of almost everything increasing, you will want to come up with a budget for your porch decor. Consider using faux pumpkins and gourds so that you can get more than one season out of them. I often like to use a combination of faux and real pumpkins. If I am using real pumpkins, I really like the heirloom varieties.
Instead of buying real mums, you can “pot” up artificial ones and then re use them next year. We used to do that in the flower shop when we were doing altar arrangements for one of the local churches. And you don’t have to worry about watering the artificial mums! Of course, you can always buy real potted mums and pumpkins.
Decide what other things you need for your Fall porch decor. Start by looking through your home for things you can reuse. Sometimes all you need to do is give a chair a fresh coat of paint. A throw or blanket can be brought outside and used to make yourself more cozy while sitting on the porch. Using pillow covers is a great way to give your throw pillows a new look for the season.
Add a touch of whimsy with free decorations or accent pieces like the rubber boots.
I love to use my Dad’s old boots in different vignettes!
Unless my husband is wearing them to clean the lanai!
Back to the front porch…..
Finally, check local thrift shops and garage sales for unique finds like a lantern or interesting candle holders.
Add extra texture and interest by doubling up your door mats!

Thank you! It is so funny that Dave wanted to keep the boots…. he usually wants to get rid of everything!
