Spread the love

Refresh your loveseat or couch without spending a lot of money! All you need is a painter’s drop cloth and a few decorative pillows!

Are you searching for  a quick way to refresh a loveseat or sofa?  How about making a drop cloth couch cover? A painter’s drop cloth is a quick and inexpensive way to give your furniture a fresh new look for Spring!

Quickly update your furniture without spending a lot of time or money by following along with this tutorial to create a new look for your furniture!

Before:

loveseat with outdated upholstery

My husband and I “inherited” a few pieces of furniture when we purchased our Florida house a little over 5 years ago.  One of the pieces was a love seat with a hide-a-bed.  It was upholstered in a tweedy fabric.  Well not exactly tweed but tweed-like, if you will.  We wanted to keep the loveseat since it had the hide-a-bed feature.  I really wasn’t keen on the fabric design and couldn’t find the kind of slipcover I wanted in the size I needed for the price I was willing to pay.

Then, I remembered that a canvas drop cloth could be used as a slipcover.  I was already planning a trip to the local Ace Hardware store to pick up a few other things, I added a drop cloth to my list.  While there, I found a canvas drop cloth that I thought would be more than long enough to cover the loveseat.  I do recommend actually measuring your furniture before purchasing the drop cloth!  I got lucky this time!

On this blog, I may sometimes use affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you purchase via the link. The price will be the same whether you use the affiliate link or go directly to the vendor’s website using a non-affiliate link.  By using my affiliate links to shop, it helps me to be able to continue bringing you fresh new ideas and projects!  Thank you!

Step 1

The first thing you will want to do is wash the drop cloth so that it isn’t stiff.

Step 2

After the drop cloth was dry, I did press the hem area.  The wrinkles in the body of the drop cloth didn’t really bother me but parts of the hem had turned up so I wanted to press them flat.

Step 3

Next, remove any existing items being used to cover the loveseat and wash them if necessary before storing it away. I had been using a combination of sheets and material to cover the tweed fabric of the loveseat:

Step 4

Place the drop cloth on the loveseat and start to work the drop cloth in place.

Step 5

By tucking in a bit of the excess fabric, I was quickly finished with slipcover process and ready to add the throw pillows!

Time Involved

Once I had the drop cloth washed and dried, I was able to press and place the slipcover and add the throw pillows to the loveseat in about 20 minutes.

Cost

Using drop cloths as slipcovers is significantly less expensive than purchasing a ready made slipcover.  For less than $25, I was able to refresh my loveseat.  The drop cloth look is definitely more relaxed than a fitted slipcover.

Thyne to Enjoy Your Refreshed Loveseat!

Once you’ve successfully completed the DIY drop cloth couch cover, sit back, relax and enjoy your “new” furniture!

Large pieces of twill fabric can be used to quickly update a piece of furniture.  I used a piece of khaki colored fabric to refresh a wing back chair.  The details can be found here: Quick Way to Refresh a Wing Back Chair

Instead of using a drop cloth, I have also used a plain white cotton sheet to update my tweed loveseat.

I have the loveseat in my office. More information about how I transformed my home office can be found here:
