Is it possible to remove peeling paint from an old mantel? Yes, yes it is! Just need a little patience and a scraper!
How is it possible that it is week 7 of the One Room Challenge (ORC) already?!
Over the course of the challenge, I have chalk painted 3 pieces of furniture and refreshed one metal cart with spray paint. I have slipcovered an ottoman and a sofa.
And finally this week, I am able to turn my attention to the most challenging part of the whole process!
I have a fireplace to “build” . This mantel is going to be the focal point of the whole room refresh! I have a pretty good idea on how I am going to make it stand up and affix it to the wall.
A friend of mine found this amazing mantel in one of the booths at Round Top, Texas in mid March. She sent several pictures to me of different mantel she had found and I just fell in love with this one! The dealer she purchased it from said it came out of an old home in New Orleans!
About 10 days after my friend went to Round Top, I was able to make a trip there myself! I found this great table and a couple of other small pieces. I was only able to be there for a day, Had I had more time, I could have found so many treasures!
The mantel stayed in the back of my van, tucked safely next to the metal gate and these amazing pieces of architectural salvage that have been in the van for over a year! Yikes! I need to find somewhere to put them!
Look What We Found in the Barn!
I finally asked my husband to help me get the mantel out of the van and start working on it! I grabbed my scraper and got to work! I did wear a mask while I was scraping. I used the paint brush to brush off the small pieces of paint.
I still have to do a little more scraping , especially on the top. Once I get it all scraped, I will then add some wax to it. Then I will be ready to attach it to the piece I have to help it stand up. I can’t wait to get this finished and moved into the living room!

with many steps in between and lots of thyme, energy and a few tears.
I also like to say I blog about flowers (as a former florist) to flour (a former pizzeria owner) and many related topics. I like to use “thyme” instead of time in sentences. My favorite things are herbs, rusty things, architectural salvage and old wooden carriers!
