Slipcovers can give your sofa or couch a new look in no time! Here is an easy sofa refresh using a slipcover!

Looking for an inexpensive way to refresh your sofa?  A ready made slipcover can quickly change the look of your sofa!

In order to create a different looks for my furniture, I have used slipcovers, drop cloths, sheets and large pieces of fabric.  Today, I am going to share my tips on using a fitted slipcover.

The Sofa Before –

When we first purchased the Florida house a few years ago from my Great Aunt, she had left behind two matching sofas.  While very comfortable, they didn’t quite have the look I was going for!

On this blog, I may sometimes use affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you purchase via the link. The price will be the same whether you use the affiliate link or go directly to the vendor’s website using a non-affiliate link.  By using my affiliate links to shop, it helps me to be able to continue bringing you fresh new ideas and projects!  Thank you!

While peach is one of my favorite colors, I felt the peachy orange sofas were a bit too heavy looking.  I ordered two steel gray slipcovers from a company online.  I used these blue slipcovers for several years.

They looked great until one day I decided I was tired of them.  I wanted a lighter look for the spring.  I ordered a few swatches of lighter fabric from the same on line company, but ultimately I decided to use a painter’s drop cloth.  All of the details on how to use a drop cloth to refresh your sofa can be found here: Quick Refresh for Your Sofa

While I did like the look of the off white drop cloth, after a little more than a year, I decided that I wanted a slightly more fitted look.  I also wanted to try a white slipcover. I was a bit concerned that the white slipcover would be too light to cover the orange color.   After getting the slipcover in place, I was very happy that the orange did not show through the white twill slipcover.

Step 1

I quickly removed the dropcloth that I had been using.  I then rearranged the pillows along the back of the couch.

Step 2

The slipcover comes with a label that helps you locate the front of the slipcover.  This helps while you are trying to fit the slipcover onto the sofa.

Once you locate the tag, then you drape the slipcover over the sofa.  Start by draping the cover over the back of the sofa and then pull the material over the sofa.  Follow the shape of your sofa and adjust the slipcover over the arms. Continue adjusting the slipcover until it is even on all four sides.

Step 3

This picture shows the pillows arranged along the back of the sofa.

Step 4

Any excess fabric can be tucked into the creases of the sofa. Continue to tuck and smooth until you are happy with the look.

 Step 5

I was quickly finished with slipcover process and ready to add the throw pillows!

I have had these flag pillows for quite awhile.  My youngest bonus son actually rescued them from the trash several years ago when his mother was moving.  I usually get them out around President’s day but I am a little early this year!

Since our lifestyle is a more casual in Florida, I am ok with the wrinkles on the slipcover.  If I keep the slipcover on this couch for the fall and winter, I will probably take it off and wash it and then steam out any wrinkles.  or not!  Who knows, I may put the steel blue one back on for the colder months.  I am very pleased with how my sofa refresh using a slipcover project turned out!
