Quick & Easy Patriotic Dough Bowl Centerpiece

A trio of battery operated pillar candles displayed in an oval dough bowl combine to make a very easy Patriotic Dough Bowl Centerpiece!

Dough bowls are an amazingly versatile Farmhouse Style decorating staple.  They are available in many sizes, shapes and colors.  I love to decorate them for the different seasons.  One of my favorites for Summer is this oval one.  By simply adding a trio of battery operated pillar candles, I can design an easy Patriotic Dough Bowl Centerpiece!

I think it took less than 15 minutes!

What is a Dough Bowl?

Dough bowls originally were used when making bread.  The bowl was a great place for the bread to rise, the wood helped retain the heat which in turn helped the dough rise.  They are also sometimes referred to as trenchers. My white one is 19 inches long, 8 inches wide and 3 inches deep.  I love the detail on the ends of the bowl.

Several of the dough bowls I have are reproductions but there are still many antique ones available.  Antique ones can be quite pricey.  I do have a hand carved round one that belonged to my Mom.  It would be considered vintage as it is over 25 years old.  It is signed by the gentleman who made it.

More information about it and how I designed the arrangement pictured below can be found here: How To Make An Armature for A Round Dough Bowl

Back to today’s project!

Designing the Dough Bowl

Pick out your dough bowl.  Since it is almost Summer, I am using a red, white, and blue theme for my decor.   I am going to use my white bowl that is pictured as a backdrop in this photo.  When choosing your dough bowl, I recommend using one that is at least 17 inch long if it is rectangle or oval.  Most of mine are in the 19 to 22 inch range.  If you are ordering online, be sure to check the dimensions.  I have a friend who ordered what she thought was a medium dough bowl and it turned out to be almost smaller than her hand!

The next step is to gather the elements you will use.  This centerpiece is so easy since I am just using the three battery candles and a few rattan hearts that were actually Valentine bowl fillers.  The battery candles that I used are no longer available but these are similar!

Honestly, it took me longer to get the batteries in the pillar candles than it did to put the centerpiece together!  I don’t know why I have such issues putting batteries in!

These battery candles have a timer setting as well as remote control.  I just love them!
