Let’s “Build” A Snowman Vignette

November 14, 2024 by Kimberly Snyder 5 Comments

Spread the love

Do you love snowmen? Are you obsessed with wooden boxes? Let’s combine the two and design a rustic snowman vignette for Christmas!

Snowmen are one of my favorite Holiday decorations!  When I lived in the midwest, I would leave my snowmen out until at least Valentine’s day. Now that I live in Florida full time, it does seem a bit strange to decorate with a snowman theme but I still love them!   By combining my love of snowmen with a few of my favorite wooden boxes and a couple of accent pieces, I created a beautiful rustic Holiday vignette!

Let me show you how I did it!

How to Create A Rustic Snowman Vignette

Let’s Start With The Base

Stenciling on old door

The chest that serves as the base of this display was my Dad’s navy sea chest.  He served in the Navy during WW2.  I have used the wooden sea chest in all the places I have lived since the mid 80s.  I added the glass top to it to protect the label on the top.  My first husband didn’t always use a coaster, so the label was beginning to get damaged.  The label is an address label from when my Dad’s girlfriend sent the sea chest back to him after he told her he was marrying someone else!  My Dad was quite the ladies’ man in his younger days!

Start Building the Display

The blue green wood box was originally a shipping crate from a tool & die company based in Dayton , Ohio.  It is one of my favorite wooden boxes.  Sadly, I had to downsize my wooden box collection dramatically when we moved to Florida.  All the details about the downsizing process can be found here: Thyme to Let Go

The Dayton box made the cut, as I like to say, for a couple of reasons.  First, the color.  The blue green color works well in a lot of vignettes.  Second, the fact it has writing and it says Dayton.  It would be better if it said Cincinnati but we will take any Ohio town.  More about my thyme living in Ohio can be found here:

Pictured below is one of the ways I use the box when it isn’t part of the snowman vignette!

Next Step is to Add in Elements For Height & Interest

I slowly layered in touches of red and green.  The tiny green chair was my Mom’s childhood chair.   An old ski tow rope peaks out of one corner. I found it while cleaning out my Dad’s workshop on the farm.

The silk arrangement helps add height to the display.

Add In The Finishing Touches

I added a primitive looking sign that says “Snowmen fall to the ground in pieces” as well as a few candy canes and some pine branches.  A resin snowman figurine sitting in a box of Christmas greenery finishes off the look.

Another Option for a Vignette using Boxes as a Base-

To bring in a touch of coastal , I added the sand dollar piece of art that was made on a piece of barn wood from my family’s barn.  I found all kinds of neat things when I was cleaning out (ok, when my helpers were cleaning out) the barn.  I shared those finds here:

I love the tool wood box Kim! I see it’s from the state I live in! I never seem to stumble across finds like that, but I sure do admire them from afar. Your chubby snowman is adorable!

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
