Update Your Silk Flowers with Spray Paint!

November 5, 2024 by Kimberly Snyder 47 Comments

Thyme to decorate & you don’t have any pine picks? With a little Imagination, it is so easy to update silk flowers with spray paint!

The Dilemma

One thing you would think a former florist would have would be a seemingly endless supply of decorating materials. Sadly, due to space constraints , I had to downsize my “cave of wonders”.  The cave of wonders is what my florist friend called all the areas where we stored everything at the shop.  The cave of wonders was vast, it held a lot.  It even had a branch location at my farm and at couple of off-site storage units.  I had a lot of material to work with! I couldn’t always find what I needed but that is fodder for another blog post!

How I came to Be Pine Pick Challenged

The downsizing process took place over a number of months.  It started with just simply trying to tackle the amount of stuff my parents left when they passed away.  I shared the downsizing process in this post: Thyme To Let Go: How I Downsized the Family Homestead

Honestly, the journey lasted a lot longer than I had planned.   I wasn’t always  thinking clearly when dealing with the process.  When I sorted thru the flower shop supplies, I wasn’t thinking about the future.   I just wanted to get the building cleared out.

Which is how I ended up standing in my living room looking at all the stuff I had pulled out of the Christmas tubs and saying “Who took the pine picks?”.  I immediately tried to blame Gracie.  Gracie got blamed for a lot.   She always said she didn’t take whatever it was that I was looking for!  She had such a sweet face!  Of course she was innocent!

Gracie with her toys

Sadly, we lost Gracie earlier this fall.  I missed her so much, I had to adopt a new “baby”.  Now, Mowgli gets blamed for all the missing things!

On this blog, I may sometimes use affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you purchase via the link. The price will be the same whether you use the affiliate link or go directly to the vendor’s website using a non-affiliate link.  By using my affiliate links to shop, it helps me to be able to continue bringing you fresh new ideas and projects!  Thank you!

After spinning around the room a few times, certain that if I just kept looking the pine pics would miraculously appear, I decided to run out to a couple of local stores to see what I could fine that might work.  I came back with some really cools things but no pine picks.  I knew there was a box (or 2, maybe even 3) of pine picks and pine sprays still at the farm in the glass house.

But having pine picks approximately 1100 miles away, doesn’t really help me when I am in the decorating zone and want to decorate NOW!

How to Update Silk Flowers with Spray Paint

My Solution

After I was finished muttering about how I couldn’t believe someone hadn’t packed the pine picks, I decided to look around the house to see what I might be able to turn into something that would work as a pine pick.  I happened to glance up and see this bundle.  It is a neutral bundle of what looks like dried grass.  I brought it to Florida thinking it had a beachy vibe.

tallow berries and sea grass

Since this is me we are talking about, I had 3 bundles of this.  I decided I could sacrifice one bundle for the good of solving the pine pick dilemma.  They also had the cute little tallow berries to add interest.  I separated the bundle into individual picks.

tallow berry individual picks ready for paint

You are probably thinking, but Kim they are brown…. brown…. not what a normal person would use for their Christmas decorations.  That is where our friend, spray paint, comes in! Let me show you how easy it is to update silk flowers with spray paint!

wicker basket filled with assorted cans of floral spray paint

We used a lot of spray paint at the flower shop.  I did bring quite a few cans of it with me.  In fact, my husband just asked why I had so much spray paint!  He asked if it was because Petals & Porch Post had so much spray paint!  I think there might have been a big box of spray paint in that last load of “stuff” from Illinois!

Back to the story : I decided that Hill Green might work.  I was going for a more coastal feel.  If you want a more traditional green, there are several shades of green available.  I included a link to Design Master Christmas Green at the end of the post.  It does look like the Christmas Green is currently unavailable on line but you might be able to find it at a craft store .  Also, there are a few other green colors available.

I shook my can of Hill Green paint and stepped outside to spray.

tallow berry picks after paint

Voila!  It worked!  The next step was to add a little pine and pinecones to the tallow berry sea grass picks .  I separated this pine spray to get the material  I needed.  This pine spray also had tallow berries so I was able to incorporate them also.

pine pick

tallow berry pine picks ready for use

To finish the pine picks, I used brown floral tape to attach the pine/pine cone pick to the beachy grassy pick.  Floral tape comes in several different colors.  I used brown for this but you could use green.  To get the floral tape to adhere, simply gently pull it to stretch it as you wrap it around the stem.  Don’t pull too hard or the tape with break!

Now you are ready to create a holiday centerpiece!

Coastal Holiday Oval Dough Bowl

I often keep an oval dough bowl on my gathering room coffee table.  I like to decorate it for the seasons.

Autumn

Christmas

coastal christmas upclose

To make the Coastal Christmas Holiday dough bowl display, I removed everything from the bowl and dusted it. I placed the battery candle in the center.   I then layered the pine picks in and then added the Christmas ornaments and  shells . I kept it fairly simple.  As it gets closer to Christmas, I can add more elements such as silver glittery pine cones or metallic painted shells.

The pine picks can be used where ever you  need a little touch of Christmas!

Love this. So creative. I have a similar problem in that all my craft ‘stuff’ is temporarily stored under our house and I can’t get to it. Challenging times! I’ll have to go digging this weekend to see if I can find my Christmas decorations.

Jennifer, I actually “stole” that term from the guy who helped me in the flower shop. He used it all the time to describe where he kept his stash. I sure he doesn’t mind that I use the term too!

I also relate to you solution. Totally what I’d do. You are my choice for the weeks Charming Homes and Gardens Link Party which we post on Wednesday!

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
