After being stored in the barn for years, see how a pile of old barnwood is transformed into a beautiful accent wall!
From A Pile of Barn Wood to a Beautiful Wall!
Read on to see a project using barnwood for an accent wall! My cousin’s granddaughter and her dad did a great job!
a little background:
When my parents first moved to the farm in 1949, there were several corn cribs on the property. In the early years of my dad’s farming career, the cribs were used for storing corn. Later they were used to store various things such as outdoor furniture, extra flowerpots, bicycles. I even found a Vetter motorcycle fairing stored in one of the cribs!
After they moved to the modular house in the back corner of the property, my Mom decided that she wanted to have one of them torn down. I think it blocked her view of the house we were living in!
The picture above is actually of the corn crib that remains standing on the property. The one she had torn down was a twin to this one. It was the same size; it was just built on the other side of the property. My Mom had a friend tear down the crib and had him store all the wood in the west stalls of the barn.
Some of the wood was used for various projects over the years. Most of it was still stored in the barn when I finally got ready to clean out the barn. You can read more about cleaning out the barn here
Cleaning out the Barn
There was quite a bit of it left so my realtor suggested listing it on Facebook Marketplace. It wasn’t long before one of my Dad’s nieces contacted me to let me know her granddaughter was interested in the barn wood. On Father’s Day, Alison and her family came with a trailer and loaded up the wood. There was so much wood, it took two trips that day. It was a rainy, dreary day. I am not sure that is what Alison’s Dad and her husband really wanted to do on Father’s Day but they were really good sports about it!
Creative Uses of the Barn Wood
They used some of the wood to panel their downstairs. It looks magnificent, doesn’t it?

My Dad is pictured below with Alison, his Great Great niece and her daughter at a family gathering about 14 years ago. My Dad always liked pretty girls! He would be pleased to know that part of the crib is now in Alison’s home.
[…] The piece of gingerbread in the front was a bit smaller than the one it is leaning on. I did let my cousin’s granddaughter give it a new home. I think she is going to make a head board out of it! I can’t wait to see it! She did amazing things with the barnwood she bought. You can read more about her barnwood walls here: […]
