From A Child’s Eyes

Spread the love

One of the major events in 2021 was the sale of my family homestead. The whole process took a lot longer than I anticipated.

In May of 2021, the sale of the farmhouse was finalized.  It was two years and seven months from the time I finally made the decision to put the house on the market until the closing.  I never thought it would take that long to find a buyer, but it was a unique property do to the fact that there were two houses on the property plus it was in a rural location.

I detailed the process in a series of blog posts titled Thyme to Let Go: How I downsized the Family Homestead.   The process started here: Part 1

and ended here: Part 7

But in all honesty, the process hasn’t really ended.  I am still dealing with the emotional aspects of it.

Occasionally, a Facebook memory will pop up to remind me of something that happened that is related to growing up and living in the farmhouse.  Here is the memory that popped up today:

A Facebook Memory from 1-2-2019

Many of the goals for 2019 revolve around the ultimate move to Florida.  Many things have to fall into place to make my timeline work.  I have to set small goals for myself each day in order to tackle everything involved while still trying to be involved at Makin’ Pizza.

I keep telling myself “It is only a house; people sell houses every day.” But a lot of my life has been lived in this house and a lot of “me” has been formed by living here.

One of my very clear childhood memories is going to an open house in Decatur, IL.   My uncle was a realtor.  The house was a ranch style home. I was probably 8 or 9 years old. When we got back into the car, I asked my parents how anyone could live in a house like that. The ceilings were so low!  Now I had been in houses with 8- or 9-foot ceilings before such as my grandma’s house but for some reason I was quite concerned about actually living in a house with low ceilings. In my mind, you needed 11- or 12-foot ceilings in order to live comfortably!  The retelling of it probably isn’t making sense but it is such a clear memory. I don’t remember what my parents’ response was.  They probably shook their heads and thought it was a weird concern for a young child.

The Ceilings in the Farmhouse

Here are a couple of pictures that help show the height of the ceilings in the farmhouse. These are pictures of the dining room.

My husband, Dave is over 6 feet tall and there is still a lot of space between the top of his head and the ceiling!

I took these pictures when in the spring of 2019 when we were working on getting the house ready to go on the market.  At that time, I wasn’t even thinking about starting a blog.  If I had been, I might have cleared off the top of the table before I took the picture!

The dining room had a wallpaper border around the top of the walls.  My Mom was quite fond of wallpaper and wallpaper borders.  You can read all about how I removed the border in the dining room here: Refreshing The Farmhouse Dining Room Walls

Before refreshing the dining room walls, I tackled the wallpaper border in the entryway.  It was long overdue and I wish I would have done it sooner! All of the details can be found here: How to Remove Wallpaper Border and How Not To Remove Wallpaper!

The Farmhouse That Made Me

Like the second paragraph in the Facebook memory says, ” a lot of “me” has been formed by living here.”  Even though I no longer own the property, I will continue to share stories and photos about it.  I started my first business on the grounds of the farmhouse so the farmhouse will always be a part of From Farmhouse to Florida.
