Coastal Farmhouse Autumn Dough Bowl

September 3, 2021 by Kimberly Snyder 4 Comments

Spread the love

Shells, white pumpkins and a battery candle are combined to bring a coastal feel to a farmhouse decorating staple!

Having an oval dough bowl makes creating a stunning seasonal centerpiece so quick and easy! Let me show you how simple it is to design a Coastal Farmhouse Autumn dough bowl.

Dough bowls get their name from their former purpose: making bread dough!   The bowl was a great place for the bread dough to rise as the wood helped retain the heat which in turn helped the dough rise.  They are also sometimes referred to as trenchers. Mine is 20 inches long and oval.  I also have a hand hewn one that is round.   The  oval shape of this one works great for use on my gathering room coffee table.   My oval dough bowl is a reproduction but there are still many antique ones available.

I love dough bowls so much, I added a slightly bigger one to my collection to use on our outdoor dining table!   Shhhhhhh,  don’t tell Dave!

The coastal colors of celadon green, aqua and cream in the picture above provide the color story for my Early Fall dough bowl centerpiece.  To decorate the oval dough bowl for Autumn, I was able to used items I already had on hand.

The candle below is battery operated.  The sand dollar motif and the aqua color help add a coastal feel to the dough bowl arrangement.  The candle looks like it is mosaic.   It is so pretty when the candle is turned on.  This one does have a timer feature.

The tiny glass balls covered with a crocheted cover resemble Japanese fishing floats.   I found these adorable glass spheres at my Mom’s house when I was clearing it out.  They were tucked in with her supply of picnic items.  They are actually meant to be weights to attach to an outdoor tablecloth to help hold it in place.  I almost put them in the donate pile until I actually looked at them and saw how cute they were and how they would fit in the coastal decor at the Florida house!

As an aside, doownsizing and getting the Illinois Farmhouse ready to sell was a long process.  I am glad I took my thyme getting it done.  I found so many treasures that might have gotten over looked had I hired an outside firm to do it.  The process detailing my “adventure” starts here:

with many, many steps in between!  All of the blog posts relating to the downsizing process start with Thyme To Let Go  if you are interested in learning more about or following along on the journey!

Back to the project!

autumn accents: white pumpkins & berries

The addition of white pumpkins similar to the ones in the bowl above as well as the coastal colored leaves helped bring an Autumn touch to the dough bowl centerpiece.  The pumpkins that I used are covered in fabric so they add  texture to the arrangement.

seashells

The shells were part of my Grandmother’s shell collection.  My grandparents used to spend the month of January in the Fort Myers, Florida area in the late 50s and early 60s and my grandmother would bring back shells.  After my grandmother passed away, my  Mom ended up with the shell collection.  My Mom and I both added to the shell collection so I currently have a lot of shells!  So many, that I have to remind myself that I don’t need to buy any more shells….. I still do of course, if I find a really cute one somewhere!

The Finished Coastal Fall Farmhouse Dough Bowl

I am almost embarrassed to admit how simple it was to add a touch of Coastal for this Autumn centerpiece!

[…] I knew I wanted to use the fall tallow berry bush, the two bundles of greenery and purple berries in the picture with the tin wall pockets and some fall leaves.  I wanted to make three bundles: 2 for the wall pockets and one for my oval dough bowl.  Dough bowls are one of my favorite things to decorate!  I keep an oval one on my coffee table and decorate it for the various seasons!  Here is a link to what it looked like last Fall!  […]

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
