Create a Stunning Hurricane Candle Succulent Centerpiece
Before you can begin creating your own hurricane candle succulent centerpiece, you’ll need to make a few decisions and then gather all the necessary materials. Here’s what you’ll need to decide: what type of container you want to use for your centerpiece and what you would like to use for the hurricane candle holder. Once you make those decisions, then you can gather the materials you will need. The basic materials include potting mix, a variety of small succulent plants, and a candle. Other things you might want to have on hand are greening pins, sheet moss, glass gems and a small scoop for planting. You can find all of these materials at your local garden center or home decor store. Once you have everything you need, you’re ready to start creating your centerpiece!
Step 1: Choose a Container For Your Hurricane Candle Succulent Centerpiece
Before we dig into the process of selecting our succulents, we need to choose the perfect container for our centerpiece. When it comes to selecting a container, there are a few things to consider. First, think about the size of your table and the space you have available for your centerpiece. You will want to choose a container that is proportional to the size of your table and doesn’t take up too much space.
Next, consider the style of your container. Do you want something sleek and modern or rustic and natural? The style of your container can help set the tone for your entire centerpiece.
Lastly, think about the material of your container. You can choose from options like ceramic, glass, or even a wooden box. Just keep in mind that certain materials may be better suited for succulents, like a container with drainage holes for proper watering. Speaking of drainage, I am adding a saucer to place under my centerpiece to collect any water that may run through when the arrangement is watered.
Since my overall decorating style is more rustic in nature, I am going to select one of my terra cotta pots to use as the base for my centerpiece.
I am actually going to choose two pots. The smaller one is going to act as a placeholder for the hurricane until I get the entire centerpiece planted. This will make more sense in a bit!
Once you have chosen the perfect container, it’s thyme to select the perfect candle holder to add an extra special touch to your arrangement.
Adding a candle (battery or wick style) and a holder to your succulent centerpiece can take it from beautiful to breathtaking. But, before you choose just any light source, consider the overall vibe you’re going for. Do you want something romantic and cozy? Or bright and whimsical? If you are going to light the candle, consider using an unscented candle or perhaps even a citronella type candle to help keep the bugs away.
Remember to also consider the safety of your candle. If you plan on lighting it, make sure it’s in a container that won’t easily tip over, such as a wide glass jar. And never, ever leave a burning candle unattended.
In keeping with the rustic feel of my centerpiece, I could have simply placed a candle down inside the smaller flower pot. To add a touch of elegance to the centerpiece, I decided to use a glass holder that was made from recycled glass instead. I used a damp cloth to clean the inside and outside of the glass to remove any dust or debris.
Sneak peak of how it will look from above-
Once my centerpiece is all planted, I will add the hurricane glass holder and a battery candle to the center of the planter. Until I am ready for that step, I simply set the glass holder aside.
Now that I have my container ready and my hurricane holder and candle picked out, it is thyme to prep the terra cotta pot!
Step 2: Prepare the Container
I had already washed the terra cotta pot with a solution of gentle soap and bleach and allowed the pot to dry thoroughly. I also washed the 4 1/2 inch plastic pot that I will use as a “riser” in the middle of the pot. After both pots were dry, I placed the plastic pot upside down in the center of the terra cotta pot. The plastic pot serves two purposes: 1) It takes up some room in the pot so I will use less potting mix and 2) it acts as a platform for the hurricane candle to rest on once the succulents are in place.
Next fill the pot about 2/3 of the way full with a quality potting mix designed to use with succulents. The potting mix should be fairly loose, not compacted.
One I had the pot filled with soil, I cleaned off the plastic pot and placed the 4 1/2 terra cotta pot on top of the plastic pot. This will act as a place holder for the hurricane candle holder. It also makes it easier to plant the succulents in a ring so that there is room for the candle holder. Let’s pick out a few different types of succulents.
Step 3: Select the Plants
When it comes to selecting succulents for your centerpiece, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the overall look and feel you want for your arrangement. Do you want a variety of colors and textures, or a more uniform look? Once you have a general idea, you can start choosing specific types of succulents.
When selecting succulents, you’ll want to look for plants that are small enough to fit comfortably in your container and that work well together. For example, you might choose a few different varieties of echeveria to create a cohesive look, or mix in some trailing varieties to add interest and motion.
It’s also important to consider the care requirements of your succulents. Some varieties need more sun than others, while some prefer more frequent watering. Choose plants that have similar needs to make caring for your centerpiece as easy as possible.
I had purchased a tray of mixed succulents from the hardware store a few weeks before I assembled my centerpiece. The tray included a nice variety of different colors and textures of succulents.
I also had a number of pots of succulents in the garden. I cut a few pieces off of one of the plants.
Now that I have my perfect succulents picked out, it’s almost thyme to actually plant them! But first, a little more prep has to be done. Let’s divide the succulents.
Step 4: Divide the Succulents and Plant them
Since my succulents are all growing together in the same flat, I need to cut them apart. If you are using individual pots of succulents, you can skip this step! You will need a sharp knife to gently cut the plants apart.
Once I divided the plants, I planted them around the perimeter of the pot. I added enough additional soil to cover the roots.
I used the small succulents as accents. The photo below is how the planter looked right after it was planted.
After I finished planting the pot, I watered the centerpiece and then tucked wet sheet moss around the edge of the pot. I actually had enough plants in the flat tray to fill the 10 inch terra cotta pot as well as this 9 in umbrella pot. The after picture of the filled umbrella pot is how the planter looked after it had been growing for 3 weeks.
If you are using individual pots of succulents, carefully remove your succulents from their pots and gently loosen the roots. Place the succulents into the soil, making sure they are evenly spaced and at the same height. Gently add extra soil around the plants to secure them in place. Water thoroughly. Add extra soil if necessary. Top the soil with a bit of wet sheet moss to add a finishing touch.
Step 5: Complete Your Hurricane Candle Succulent Centerpiece
Now that the succulents are planted, it is thyme to add the hurricane holder and candle.
Place a pillar candle or tea light in the center of the hurricane candle holder. The candlelight will create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while also highlighting the beauty of your succulent centerpiece. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your new centerpiece creation!
Simple Summer Succulent Centerpiece
Create a long lasting, easy care living centerpiece for your outdoor celebrations
Materials
- 10 inch terra cotta pot
- saucer
- 4 1/2 inch terra cotta pot
- 4 1/2 inch plastic pot
- potting mix for succulents
- assorted succulent plants
- glass hurricane
- battery operated pillar candle or regular candle
Tools
- watering can
- sharp knife
- small spoon or scoop
Instructions
- Select the type of container you want to use. Succulents work well in a variety of different types of containers. A pot with drainage holes is preferred. SInce my decorating style is more rustic in nature, I selected a 10 inch terra cotta pot .
- The next step is to prepare your container. Since I am using a pot I already had, I washed it in a solution of gentle soap and bleach. I allowed the pot to dry before I placed an inverted 4 1/2 in plastic pot in the center. The smaller pot acts as a place holder for where the hurricane candle will ultimately sit. Using a potting mix designed for succulents, I filled the terra cotta pot 2/3 of the way full. The soil should be loose, not compacted.
- When selecting succulents for your centerpiece, it is important to choose plants that have similar care requirements. To add interest to your finished centerpiece, select plants that have different growing habits. I used several different ones that had trailing growth habits to add motion to my centerpiece as well as ones that had a more upright growth habit.
- Divide the succulents using a sharp knife or gently remove them from their individual pots in order to plant them. Carefully loosen any tangled roots. Place each succulent in the pot and then cover the roots with enough soil to be sure the plant is level and secure. Water lightly to settle the soil and give the succulents a good start.
- Once the plants are planted, add the hurricane holder and candle to your centerpiece. Place on your table and enjoy!
