DIY Hanging Mason Jar Vase

Are you looking for a unique way to add color to your late Summer outdoor event?  Why not try making hanging vases out of vintage blue mason jars?

As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn from Qualifying Purchases

This DIY hanging mason jar project is perfect for anyone who wants to create something unique.  I like to use these as flower vases but you could also use them with battery operated fairy lights or tea lights.

Supplies

You will need an assortment of mason jars.  I really like the vintage blue ones but you can use clear if you want.  The jars come in different sizes.  I usually use the pint size or the quart size.

You will also need some decorative aluminum wire to make the handle or hanger.  Smithers Oasis makes a variety of decorative aluminum wire .  An example of red  Diamond wire is shown below.  It is formed in the shape of a bow.  The wire is very pliable and super easy to work with .

a collection of Oasis wire products

Below is an example of Aluminum wire in pink.  I used this type of wire in a blue color for this project.  You can use any 12 gauge wire.

Pink Oasis Aluminum wire

Choose a color of wire that coordinates with the colors that you are using for your event.

To Form the Handles

Cut a length of the Aluminum wire .  Wrap it around the top of the jar several times and then form a handle.  Make a hook shape and attach the hanger to the opposite side of the jar.  Use your vise grips to crimp the wire in order to be sure it is secure.

I added some sheer ribbon to the handle to add more interest and motion.

The Finished Hanging Mason Jar

You will also need a shepards hook or something to hang your mason jar vase on.  A word of caution:  please make sure your handle is securely fastened to the jar before filling it with your floral arrangement.

I did a test “hang” over carpet in case it fell !  I didn’t want to break the glass jar!  Once you are confident that your handle is secure and can hold your jar, you are ready to fill your jar with either fresh or faux flowers!

For this late summer celebration, I used a variety of orange, cream and yellow flowers.

Another Option Using Rustic Wire:

In addition to the aluminum wire, Smither’s Oasis makes several other wires including one called Rustic Wire.  The instructions on how to make a hanging mason jar with Rustic Wire can be found here:

Pictured below is a hanging mason jar filled with sand and a tea light.  To add texture, the canning jar ring is added to the top of the jar.

SHOPPING LINKS:

This is the color I used.  The Oasis brand in this color is currently not available.  I will include a link for a similar wire.

One More Example of a Mason Jar Vase Project

While this one doesn’t have a handle, you could easily add a handle to this Mason Jar vase.  I love that these fairy lights are waterproof!

I use either aluminum wire or the rustic wire by Smither’s Oasis. I like both products.

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
