Shop Your Home: How to Decorate Without Spending a Dime
If you’re looking to refresh your home decor but don’t have the money for new items, I have a solution that’s not only budget-friendly, it is eco-friendly, too! Simply shop your home!
By simply rearranging and repurposing items you already own and using your imagination, you can design a fresh new look for your home without spending a dime!
Get creative and think outside the box when it comes to repurposing items in your home. Not only will it save you money, but it will also add a personal touch to your decor.
Take inventory of what you have
To get started, take a look around your home and identify items that are no longer serving their original purpose or are just taking up space. This will help you see what items you can repurpose and what items it may be time to donate or sell. Think about how you can repurpose these items into something new and exciting. With a little bit of imagination and some DIY know-how, you can create a one-of-a-kind decorating style that adds character and charm to your home.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. If your first attempt doesn’t turn out quite as expected, don’t give up. Keep trying until you find the perfect use for each item in your home. You’ll be amazed at how a few simple changes can transform your space into a beautiful and welcoming home.
Rearrange furniture and accessories
One of the easiest ways to give your home a fresh new look without spending any money is to simply rearrange your furniture and accessories. Moving your couch, tables, and chairs around can create a completely new look and feel in your home.
Start by assessing your current layout and identifying any problem areas. Is there a piece of furniture that blocks natural light or interrupts traffic flow? Once you’ve identified the issues, consider how you can rearrange your pieces to better suit your needs.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different arrangements before settling on one. You may find that a new layout not only looks better but also makes your space feel more functional. And if you still aren’t happy with your setup, you can always switch things up again.
Try moving a chest of drawers to a different wall
Use a table in a different way. This scrub top table is one of my favorite pieces of furniture.
I used it to to make a “desk” in my office by placing a bookcase on top of it!
Once you’ve rearranged your furniture, take a step back and appreciate your handiwork. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference a simple change can make. And with a new layout, you’ll be inspired to display your collections and other decorative items in a fresh and exciting way.
Look for items that can be used in different ways or in different rooms. For example, a decorative wooden bowl from your dining room
ould be moved out to your outdoor living space and used as a centerpiece for the Summer season.
Or as a tray to hold sandwiches during a casual Summer meal.
Instead of packing up that holiday throw pillow
Use it as a Summer accent pillow! After all, don’t we all need a little more “Joy” in our lives?
You can also switch up your accessories, like using pillow covers instead of purchasing new accent pillows.
Move your accent pieces from one location. Several things from this vignette were relocated to other spots in my home.
The architectural piece now serves as an accent to this display:
The tin wall pocket is now in the entryway in a garden style vignette:
The Antique Market sign, which is actually an old door repurposed as a sign, is currently outside in this cozy nook:
And the old wooden box now holds my silk flowers! I used to be a florist so I may have a few more silk flowers than a “normal” person!

The chest on the bottom is my Dad’s old Navy sea chest. I have previously used it as a coffee table. Currently, it is used to store photos and other keepsakes.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different arrangements until you find the ones that work best for you.
DIY projects with items you already own
DIY projects are a great way to decorate your home without spending a dime. Look around your home for items that can be repurposed or upcycled into something new. For example, I took this old, tattered pillow case:
Cut off the edging and turned it into an adorable flower to use as an accent in a sugar mold:

while using the rest of the pillowcase to line an old frame to display this vintage child’s sailor suit!

Instead of replacing your furniture or purchasing custom slipcovers, you can use a simple painter’s drop cloth as a way to cover your existing couch or loveseat!
A sheet can also be turned into a makeshift slipcover:
Use mason jars for storage:

Or as a vase:

The possibilities are endless when it comes to DIY projects, so get creative and have fun!
