My name is Kimberly and I have a passion for flowers (a former florist) and flour (a former pizzeria owner) and many things in between! Especially rusty and chippy items! I love to share all the things I have learned over the years. Sometimes I tell stories about my life. Other times, I will share a craft, a decorating tip or a recipe. I hope you enjoy your thyme here today and learn at least one thing during your visit!
Let’s Get Started!
The Challenge – Creative Ways to Organize A Home Office
Whether you use your home office as a place to work from home or as a space to manage your home, a dedicated space can be a great way to boost productivity and creativity. But if the space around you is cluttered and disorganized, it’s difficult to focus and stay productive. Here are a few creative tips to help you organize your home office for better focus, productivity and inspiration!
Start With a Plan: Evaluate and Prioritize Your Needs
A well-organised office starts with a plan. Take some time to evaluate how you use your office and prioritize your needs. Think about how you work, what items you need at hand, and what would make your work process easier. Once you have formulated your plan, create distinct areas for each activity or item and determine the best way to organize them in the allotted space. Using these guidelines, you will be ready to begin to arrange furniture, select storage solutions and decorate accordingly.
Let’s see where I started:
Even before we decided to make the permanent move to Florida, I wanted to turn one of the bedrooms into an office area. I chose the one that had more natural light. With the blinds closed, it is hard to tell how much light comes in.
After the movers brought the 2nd big load from Illinois, the office was full of things I wanted to use! The move from Illinois turned out to be much more time consuming than I originally planned!

Incorporate Office Furniture That Serves Both Functional and Aesthetic Purposes
Look for pieces that offer clever storage solutions such as hide-away chests, shelves for extra storage, or a seating option that serves multiple functions. Additionally, try using multi-level wall shelving to create more depth to your home office and keep the space looking inviting and organized.
An example of a dual purpose seating option is this love seat. It was one of the pieces of furniture that came with our house. The love seat is actually a hide-a-bed. My office can be a guest room if necessary! I used a sheet as a simple slipcover.
Quick & Easy Way to Refresh a Loveseat
Another storage piece that I use in my office is this antique box. It has a hinged lid. I currently have it filled with photo albums.
I love to use the top of it for an additional display area.
Where Is It All Going to Go?
Slowly, the office was beginning to take shape.
I really wanted to hang the cabinet on the wall and place the desk underneath it. I used the painter’s tape to mark where the desk should sit. However, the cabinet turned out to be too heavy to safely hang on the wall if I was going to display anything in it. I was so sad.
The cabinet is painted a creamy white. There is a bit of the celadon green peeking thru. The bottom of the cabinet has a gentle curve, kind of like a wave. It isn’t as noticeable when the cabinet is sitting on the floor!
If I couldn’t hang the cabinet on the wall above the desk, maybe I could angle the desk and put the cabinet behind it.
Dave came up with the idea of putting the desk in front of the window so I could look out while I was working. He thought putting the love seat on the opposite wall opened up the room. Don’t tell him but he was right!
The off white cabinet/bookcase eventually went in the corner along the wall once I got all the boxes unpacked (or moved into the other bedroom to deal with later.) I styled the top of the cabinet/bookcase with one of my wooden carriers, a garden themed sign and a bouquet of silk hydrangeas.
Personalize the Space with Accents to Reflect Your Personality
No matter the shape or size of your home office space, it’s important to make it your own with simple touches. I use a pieces of family memorabilia combined with a muted color palette to make my office a reflection of my personality. I am fortunate to have a ready supply of items that I can use. If you need to find a few more accent pieces to help you decorate, simply search thrift stores or online marketplaces for pieces that reflect your personality.
Here are a few examples in my office:
The black phone was the phone in my parents’ house when I was growing up. My mom worked for the phone company for many years, so I thought it was a good memento to bring to Florida.
The scrub top table that I use as a desk was a silent auction find. When I first brought it home, the top was covered in old red linoleum. It didn’t take me too long to rip that linoleum off! I also had the legs repainted. I shared the other items I bought at that auction in this post: Silent Auction Finds.
The end table was a yard sale find. I love the cut-out trim that looks like waves! I did use some spray paint on it to give it a more muted look. I really need to clean that wall before I take anymore pictures!
I love using pieces from my various collections to decorate this bookcase. It also serves as storage for my collection of quilts as well as cookbooks and gardening books.
More Creative Ways to Organize A Home Office
1. Keep Your Desk Clean & Decluttered
Keeping your desk clean and decluttered can help you maximize efficiency and reduce stress. Focus on only what is necessary for the tasks you are working on, anything else should be stored away or removed from the desktop environment. Prioritize the items that need to remain on the desks, such as laptops, pens, stationary, phone and other items that you use regularly. Use organizers to keep all your important documents, notes and other necessary items in order. When everything is easily accessible it saves time and helps keep productivity levels high.
2. Utilize Appropriate storage for Supplies and Paperwork
Paperwork and office supplies are key parts of most home offices. It is important to have the right kind of storage for both components. Utilize filing cabinets or drawers to store paperwork in an organized manner, while smaller items like pens, paperclips, and other office supplies can be contained in drawers. Bin storage can also be used to contain loose bits and pieces while preventing them from becoming clutter on the desk top. Keeping small items off your desktop helps ensure that you have a clean workspace which makes organization more
3. Designate a Zone for Computer Peripherals
Have you ever had your desk cluttered with wires and peripheral devices like printers and scanners? One easy way to keep them organized is to designate a certain area or a corner as a “technology zone.” This gives you the perfect place for all the peripheral devices without them taking over your entire workspace. You can also use cable concealers and organizers to help hide away excess cables.
I share a printer with my husband. We decided to invest in a wireless printer so that sharing it was easier. The printer is actually kept in our bedroom.
4. Incorporate Multipurpose Furniture Items
If your desk and wall space are both limited, you can get creative with the furniture pieces you choose. Incorporate a few multipurpose items into your home office setup like shelves, bins, and drawers that allow you to store items inside or on top. This will help keep items off of the floor and clutter free.
I have a cottage style magazine rack that I like to keep my reference materials in. I originally kept on the floor of my office, right inside the doorway. I recently moved it closer to my desk. I have it up on top of a storage cubby now.
5. Maximize Every Corner of the Room With Creative Storage Solutions
Incorporate vertical and other unique storage solutions to turn the space into efficient multifunctional areas. Place shelves, drawers, and baskets on walls to store items and fill any awkward or tricky spaces with containers that can transform into additional storage space. Creative solutions such as floating shelves over a desk area can give you extra office storage options while looking modern and chic. Also use modular furniture pieces to maximize any available corner space in your office.
One way I maximize my storage space is to use the back of the door for extra storage. By using an over the door shoe organizer, I can have easy access to my silk flowers!

Coming Soon! Closet Transformation!
One area of the office still needs some work! The closet serves many functions: overflow clothes from my main closet, office supplies, craft supplies, out of season home decor, etc. Pictured below is the “Before” photo.
This is the current state of the closet. I have managed to do a bit of organization but the area still needs more help! Hopefully, I can finish up the closet project in March! Here is where the “in the box” ideas are implemented! I use a lot of decorative boxes for storage!
