A Coastal Farmhouse Color Palette combines the soothing colors of the sea with an assortment of neutral shades.

Welcome to Week 4 of the Spring 2023 One Room Challenge!  This week, I am refining my color palette for the outdoor living area refresh.

The Coastal Farmhouse color palette was created by combining colors inspired by the sea as well as by the countryside.  I will use design elements that are coastal in nature.  I will also rely on touches of old wood and galvanized metal objects to tie in the farmhouse aspect.  The end result will hopefully be a calming, relaxing retreat!

Let Me Share A Few Examples-

One of the ways I like to use design elements and color to refresh my home is adding some charming farmhouse touches.  From rustic accents to florals (fresh & faux) to the industrial feel of galvanized metal, these decorating elements help bring the cozy and inviting feel of farmhouse style into my decor.  I use the colors found in nature in my decorating.

I also like to add touches of the sea, especially now that we are living in Florida.  I love to be on the water or at least able to look at water whenever possible!  One of the ways I like to add touches of the sea is to add shells to my decor.  I also like to use shades of blue and green.

A coastal farmhouse color palette is one of my favorite ways to decorate an area.  By combining coastal and farmhouse together, it is easy to feel like you are never too far from the beach.

Things to Consider When Using A Coastal Farmhouse Color Palette

If you’re looking to create a coastal farmhouse color palette, there are some things you should consider before starting. First, think about what kind of space you’ll be using the color palette in. Is it a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, or other area? Next, think about the type of furniture you’ll be adding to the room. Will it be wood, metal, glass, or something else? Finally, think about the lighting in the room. What kind of light will be coming into the room?

Let’s use my outdoor living area as an example.  The area is our covered screened in lanai.  Most of the furniture we have out there is either vintage wrought iron, weather-proof wicker or acacia wood.  We have two overhead wet rated ceiling fan with lights and various solar lanterns.

Pictured below is how one of the seating areas was decorated last summer.  I will be using the same furniture as well as some of the accent pieces. 

When choosing your color palette, you will want to start out picking a neutral base.  This will be a color that works will all the other colors in the area. Examples of neutrals would be white, cream, tan, gray, or black.  I am using black as my neutral base color with a few touches of grey.

Once your base is chosen, it is thyme to add in a few accent or contrasting colors.   Give some thought as to how you want these colors to work together.  Are you wanting the colors to be more vibrant and add a pop of color?  Bright colors can draw attention to a particular area of the space.  Pops of color can also help bring out the natural beauty of the space.

Consider using complementary colors.  Start by picking two colors that contrast with each other.  Use a color wheel to help you choose your colors.  Complimentary colors are opposite of each other on the color wheel.

Once you’ve chosen your primary and secondary colors, mix them together to create a third color. If you’re using a color wheel, move the three colors around until you find a combination that works well with your space.

As part of the Spring 2023 ORC,  I plan to finally get the walls patched and painted.  I am slowly accomplishing the items on my list!

1. Replace Damaged Screens and Properly Secure The Cage
2. Clean the travertine tile to remove dirt, grime & algae
3. Patch & Paint stucco walls
4. Clean & Paint metal support beams
5. Add mulch around perimeter of lanai cage
6. refresh patio pots around lanai cage.
7. Add more lighting to the pool cage area
8. repaint mesh patio table top
9. rearrange patio furniture
10. use existing storage more effectively
11. set up a potting area outside the lanai

A Simple Explanation of the One Room Challenge

In 2011, Linda Weinstein decided to join together with a small group of her online friends with the goal of finishing a room in a designated amount of time.  The group of friends worked on their projects and helped motivate each other to stay on track.  She named the event One Room Challenge®, since staying focused and completing the project could be quite a challenge.

Fast forward to the present and the event is now held bi-annually.  The One Room Challenge showcases designers and Social Media Influencers.   The campaign begins on the first Wednesday of every April & October.  The campaign hopes to inspire individuals by showcasing new ideas and trends in home design and decor.

Bloggers and other social media influencers are welcome to join in the challenge as Guest Participants. For the next 8 Wednesdays (starting April 5th), the participants will be sharing their progress on their blogs and various social media platforms.
