Coastal Farmhouse Color Palette

A Coastal Farmhouse Color Palette combines the soothing colors of the sea with an assortment of neutral shades.

The Coastal Farmhouse color palette was created by combining colors inspired by the sea as well as by the countryside.  When decorating with this color palette, I use design elements that are coastal in nature.  I also rely on touches of old wood and galvanized metal objects to tie in the farmhouse aspect.  The end result will hopefully be a calming, relaxing retreat!

Let Me Share A Few Examples-

One of the ways I like to use design elements and color to refresh my home is adding some charming farmhouse touches.  From rustic accents to florals (fresh & faux) to the industrial feel of galvanized metal, these decorating elements help bring the cozy and inviting feel of farmhouse style into my decor.  I use the colors found in nature in my decorating.

I also like to add touches of the sea, especially now that we are living in Florida.  I love to be on the water or at least able to look at water whenever possible! We even turned the living room of our home into the dining room so that I could sit at the dining room table and look out the window to the lake across the street!  You can see a glimpse of Lake Zappa in the right corner of this photo:

A coastal farmhouse color palette is one of my favorite ways to decorate an area.  By combining coastal and farmhouse together, it is easy to feel like you are never too far from the beach.

Things to Consider When Using A Coastal Farmhouse Color Palette

If you’re looking to create a coastal farmhouse color palette, there are some things you should consider before starting. First, think about what kind of space you’ll be using the color palette in. Is it a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, or other area? Next, think about the type of furniture you’ll be adding to the room. Will it be wood, metal, glass, or something else? Finally, think about the lighting in the room. What kind of light will be coming into the room?

Let’s use my outdoor living area as an example.  The area is our covered screened in lanai.  Most of the furniture we have out there is either vintage wrought iron, weather-proof wicker or acacia wood.  We have two overhead wet rated ceiling fans with lights.  Various solar lanterns are used at night to provide additional lighting.

Selecting Your Color Palette

When choosing your color palette, you will want to start out picking a neutral base.  This will be a color that works will all the other colors in the area. Examples of neutrals would be white, cream, tan, gray, or black.  I often use black as my neutral base color with a few touches of grey.

Once your base is chosen, it is thyme to add in a few accent or contrasting colors.   Give some thought as to how you want these colors to work together.  Are you wanting the colors to be more vibrant and add a pop of color?  Bright colors can draw attention to a particular area of the space.  Pops of color can also help bring out the natural beauty of the space.

Consider using complementary colors.  Start by picking two colors that contrast with each other.  Use a color wheel to help you choose your colors.  Complimentary colors are opposite of each other on the color wheel.

Once you’ve chosen your primary and secondary colors, mix them together to create a third color. If you’re using a color wheel, move the three colors around until you find a combination that works well with your space.
