Looking for a quick way to decorate your dough bowl for the season? A simple hand tied bouquet of faux flowers could be just the solution!
A Simple Solution to Decorating Your Dough Bowl
Since moving to Florida, I have kept an oval dough bowl on my gathering room coffee table. I really enjoy decorating it for the seasons.
Lately, I have been drawn to more simple decor. A “less is more” type of thinking. Probably because I am still suffering from sensory overload from all the packing and sorting I have been doing for the past months! If you are just joining me on my journey, I am referring to the over 3 year process of downsizing and ultimately selling my family homestead. The process started here:
The Dough Bowl
Now that all of that is behind me, I am finding myself drawn more to more muted colors. I recently replaced our blue slip covers with white ones made out of drop cloths. With the lighter palette in the gathering room, I was looking for a simple seasonal arrangement for the dough bowl.

I believe that mine is a reproduction but there are still many antique ones available. Dough bowls used to be used when making bread. The bowl was a great place for the bread to rise, the wood helped retain the heat which in turn helped the dough rise. They are also sometimes referred to as trenchers. Mine is 20 inches long and oval. I also have a hand hewn one that is round. The oval shape of this one seems to work better on the coffee table.
The Seasonal Inspiration
For an early Spring dough bowl arrangement, I had made a hand tied arrangement of pink faux tulips.
I liked it so well, I thought maybe I could replicate it for late Spring with only a few small changes. While watching a Zoom earlier this week on photo styling, I was reminded of some ribbon and white tulips that I had found when I went through all the boxes from my days of owning the flower shop. The strip of webbing is actually excess “fabric” that I cut off of a piece of non skid rug pad! I saved it thinking it might come in handy one day! This type of thinking is why my husband thinks I am a hoarder!
Close Up of the Ribbon
Muslin Ribbon Tied around the Stems
I simply cut off a piece of the muslin ribbon and tied it around the stems. Then I placed the bouquet in the dough bowl.
While this option would have worked, I wanted to add a little more texture and interest to the arrangement. By winding the strip of webbing into a whimsical shape and placing it under the hand tied tulip bouquet, the arrangement is taken from ok to striking, don’t you agree?
Another View
The actual choice of what kind of faux flowers to use is up to you. White roses, daisies, or even a bundle of green faux herbs would be equally as lovely. Bright colors or what I call a hot summer mix of colors could also be used. The technique is the same regardless of the color palette chosen!

Curious about the scrub top table under the bowl?
I absolutely love this table! I call it the “Glo Ann” table after the friend who gave it to me! If you are interested in learning more about the table, you can find all the details here: Farmhouse Fireplace Decorated for Spring
