A Look Back – Autumn in the Garden

It is not too late to refresh your outdoor landscape for Autumn! Here are some ideas from Autumn seasons past to help spur your creativity!

If you have been following me for awhile, you know that creating patio pots/outdoor planters as well as European Dish Gardens are two of my very favorite things to do.  Unfortunately, this fall I haven’t been able to spend much thyme working on potting and planting. To be completely honest, I have spent the majority of my thyme this fall concentrating on finishing up our outdoor addition.

And if you are new to the blog, you will soon discover my interests range from Flowers ( a former florist) to Flour (a former pizzeria owner ) and many things in between!

I did add two sets of hanging solar lights to our landscape this fall.  These lights are so very versatile!  Here is how they look during the day on the front of our home.

Fall also hasn’t quite arrived in Southwest Florida either.  Even after being down here full time for just over two years, I still struggle with learning to garden in the tropics!  Transitioning from Zone 6a to Zone 10 a has been a bit of a challenge for me!

I shared some of my struggles as well as how to plant a patio pot in this post: Gardening in the Tropics

If you live where Fall has already arrived, there are some tips in this post Late Fall Makeover For A Geranium Patio Pot

about how to give your summer geranium pot a quick makeover/refresh and enjoy it through the Autumn season.  Check out the before photo of this geranium patio pot in the post highlighted above.  It really was quite sad looking!

One quick way to add Autumn touches to your outdoor planters is to add pumpkins or gourds to the planters.

This picture was taken last Fall when I was back in Illinois trying to finish clearing out the farmhouse I grew up in.  Downsizing and ultimately selling my family homestead was a multi step process that ended up spanning more months than I originally anticipated.

Last September I made the journey back to Illinois to pack up more “stuff” and freshening up the house for a broker’s open house my realtor was having.  I ended up going to my favorite Amish greenhouse and purchasing some fall planters for the Fall Farmhouse Front Porch.

As well as adding pumpkins or gourds to your planters, you can add silk flowers.  I was able to cut one bush of silk flowers apart and add the leaves to two of my succulent pots.

Two years ago, my husband & I took a trip to Europe.  We were able to spend a few days on the island of Lido which is near Venice Italy .   The picture below of the lavender was taken while we were on Lido.  This lavender was planted in the boulevard of the main street running through town.

This flower shop in Lido, Italy reminded me a lot of my former flower shop Petals & Porch Posts.  I loved looking at all the pretty mums while we were walking by!
