Simple Ways to Add A Festive Touch to Your Hutch

Looking for a budget friendly way to style your hutch for the holidays? Here are a few quick tips to get you started!

Holiday Touches For The Corner Cabinet

This corner cabinet was in the farmhouse in Illinois when my parents moved into the house in 1948.

When I was growing up, I just assumed it was built in.  I found out that it wasn’t when my Mom moved it into their house when we moved into to farmhouse.  If you are new to my story, my husband & I moved to the farm that I grew up on and had a house built in the back for my parents in the early 2000s.

Fast forward a number of years and we decided to move to Florida full time.  I decided that the corner cabinet was one of the few pieces of furniture that would make the move with us.  Its journey to Florida was not an easy one, the details can be found here:

Patriotic Display for Everyday

For most of the year, the corner cabinet is styled with a patriotic theme.   A few of my husband’s mortar & pestles have also been displayed on the bottom shelf.  Although the cabinet does look great for everyday,  I like to refresh it for the Holidays.

Holiday Thyme for the Corner Cabinet

In prior years, I have used a deep red, white and blue color scheme to refresh the cabinet for the Holidays !  This is the process I follow.

First, I packed up the two Pfaltzgraff commemorative pieces.  I moved most of Dave’s pharmacy collection to the shelves in the bottom of the piece.  There are two storage shelves at the bottom of the piece that can’t be seen in the picture.  The shelves come in quite handy for quickly storing things!

I wanted to still display my Dad’s flag so I used a large plate holder to prop it up on top of a box to give it more height.  I do need to get a case for it.  It was almost damaged in the same move that involved the corner cabinet.  The box it was in was damaged by rodents.  Moving long distance can be full of unexpected perils!  Fortunately, the flag was not damaged.  The Jim Shore Patriotic angel and the redware plate compliment the flag.

Corner Cabinet Styled for Christmas

Ruby Red & Holly

After refreshing the display on the top of the cabinet, I took everything out of the cabinet and dusted the shelves.  I had already pulled some treasures out of the Christmas boxes.  The top shelf has two Holiday themed plates with a holly motif, a ruby red glass container, two vintage porcelain Santa boots and a vintage paper Santa and sleigh.

An empty box covered with a red napkin serves as a stand for the ruby red glass container.  It is hard to see the container, so I added a battery candle with a timer to the display.  It really looks nice in the evenings when the candle is on.

Grandpa’s Restaurant China

Corner Cabinet Christmas Style

My maternal Grandpa owned a restaurant in a small town in Illinois for several years.  My Mom worked there as a waitress.  Her experience working in the restaurant led her to forbid me from ever owning a restaurant.  She felt it was the hardest job in the world.  After she passed away, I decided to purchase an existing pizzeria.  Fortunately, experienced staff came with the business so it made my life a lot easier!  You can read about my manager Tara here:

My Grandpa passed away when I was 5 1/2.  My Mom and Grandma along with their staff , kept the restaurant running for another year and 1/2 or so.  I celebrated my 6th birthday there.  I am pretty sure I was wishing for that pizzeria!

My Mom kept a few place setting of the red & white restaurant china that they used.  I also found a few more pieces on Ebay.  I decided to display most of it on the 2nd and bottom shelves.  Previously, I had only displayed a few of the pitchers and the sugar bowl and creamer. My Aunt gave me the custard cups a few years before she passed away.

The dishes make a nice addition to the corner cabinet, don’t you think?

The red plastic salt & pepper shaker is an advertising piece from my paternal Grandfather’s Implement business.  Somehow we ended up with 2.  The other one is in the cabinet in my office.

Blue Christmas?

The third shelf holds an assortment of Delft China as well as a Swedish horse and a Swedish glass pitcher.  Several of these were things I brought back with me from my trip to Europe when I was in High School.  There is also a small Polish pottery bowl and a glass jar that has a star embossed in it.  The Snyder plate is a piece of restaurant china from a restaurant in Minnesota. My sister-in-law gave it to my husband.  The small mortar & pestle is a Delft piece from my husband’s collection.

Now my cabinet is ready for the Holidays!  After the Holidays, it won’t take too long to refresh it for Valentine’s Day!

Another way to decorate the hutch for the Holidays is to add Christmas themed Santa plates!
