Small Linen Closet Makeover: 5 Simple Ways to Add Storage

August 14, 2026 by Kimberly Snyder Leave a Comment

Do you have a linen closet that isn’t being used to store linens? I have some linen closet storage ideas to share with you!

Linen closets are often used for storing bedding, towels, and other household items.  If you have a linen closet, chances are good that it has a lot of unused space. You can use those extra spaces to add more storage options.  I’d love to share a few of my linen closet storage ideas with you!

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Linen Closet

Our linen closet wasn’t storing linens at all — it had slowly become a catch‑all for cookbooks, baking pans, and home décor.

Instead of fighting it, I decided to make the space work for how we actually live. Here are five simple ideas that helped me turn this small closet into a functional storage spot.

Materials

  • Wire shelf
  • Shelf liner
  • Baskets (lidded or open)
  • Decorative boxes
  • Canvas bags or totes

Instructions

1. Add an extra shelf for more vertical storage

I placed a wire shelf on top of the existing one to double the space. Adding shelf liner underneath helped stabilize it.

In the picture above, it looks like the shelf is a little unstable.  I cleared everything off the top shelf.

I added shelf liner to the shelf to add more stability before putting the wire shelf back in place.

2. Use baskets to group similar items

I store home décor pieces I’m not currently using in baskets. It keeps everything contained and easy to grab when I’m styling a room.

3. Add a large lidded basket on the floor

This instantly made the bottom of the closet more usable. It’s perfect for bulky or seasonal items.  I am not sure if Gracie is trying to hide or if she thinks she is supervising!

4. Store hobby items where you actually use them

Cooking is one of my hobbies, so I keep all my cookbooks in this closet. It’s right off the dining area, so they’re still easy to reach.

5. Use decorative boxes and bags for small or awkward items

Small, lidded boxes hold booklet‑sized cookbooks and appliance manuals. Canvas bags keep baking pans and serving pieces organized and dust‑free.

The picnic basket used to belong to my paternal grandmother.  It no longer has a lid, but it still works to hold a variety of items.

The closet now holds cookbooks, baking pans, décor items, and a few sentimental pieces — all neatly organized and easy to access. It’s proof that a linen closet doesn’t have to store linens to be useful.

Tip

Let your closet serve your real life, not the “ideal” one. If linens live better somewhere else, free the closet to hold what you actually reach for.  I keep our extra linens in the guest bedroom dresser.

I pulled together this simple patriotic vignette with vintage touches, soft blues, and a few gentle pops of red. It’s amazing how a little fabric, a postcard, and a favorite finial can turn into something sweet for summer.

If you love soft Americana style, this one’s for you. ❤️🤍💙
