Springthyme Lilacs
A gentle story from my Illinois springs
There are certain flowers that stay with you long after you’ve moved away from the place where they grew. For me, lilacs are one of those flowers. They don’t grow here in Florida — at least not the old‑fashioned, fragrant varieties I grew up with — but in Illinois, they were one of the first signs that spring had finally arrived.
Every year, the lilac bushes that flanked the driveway of the farmhouse burst into bloom. They’d been there for a long thyme, planted by hands long before mine, and their scent would drift across the yard in that unmistakable way only lilacs can.
A Spring Welcome
When I look back at those Illinois springs, this is the image that comes to mind first — lilacs gathered simply, placed in a weathered container, and left to be beautiful without fuss. It’s the kind of spring welcome that doesn’t need staging. It just happens.

Driveway Lilacs
The lilac bushes along the farmhouse driveway were always the first thing I noticed when I arrived. Their branches arched overhead, heavy with blooms, and the scent would meet me before I even stepped out of the car. This close‑up captures exactly how it felt to stand beneath them — sunlight, petals, and that soft purple haze.

Spring Lilac Arrangements
When I visited the farmhouse that last spring, the lilacs were in full bloom. I clipped a few branches and brought them inside, placing them in this simple white pitcher. It reminded me of the old enamelware pieces that always lived in the farmhouse kitchen — humble, practical, and perfect for flowers.

A Mason Jar Vignette
For this vignette, I placed several stems of fresh lilacs in an old blue Mason jar. The soft purple against the aqua glass felt like spring distilled into color. I set the jar on a mercury glass tray and added two small metal heart boxes — just enough to create a quiet moment without overwhelming the flowers.

By the Fireplace
Photo 5: Lilacs in white pitcher in front of brick fireplace
This arrangement sat near the farmhouse fireplace, where the brick backdrop made the lilacs glow even more. It’s one of those simple, lived‑in corners that feels like home — a place where flowers, memories, and everyday life meet.

More Lilac arrangements
This is where I played a little, trying the lilacs in different vessels and letting each one tell its own story.
A soft, rustic moment — almost French‑country in spirit.

Grounded, cozy, and very farmhouse‑spring.

Carrying Lilacs Forward
Even though these old-fashioned lilacs don’t bloom here in Florida, I carry their memory with me every spring. Their scent, their color, the way they framed the farmhouse driveway — all of it is woven into my sense of the season.
Sometimes a flower becomes more than a flower.
Sometimes it becomes a place, a moment, a chapter.
And lilacs will always be part of mine.
