How to Create a Stunning Summer Garden

Ready to add some color to your summer garden? My friends & I are spilling the dirt on our favorite flowers for summer planting!

It is almost Summertime! Thyme to get out into the garden and fill your outdoor living area with beautiful blooming plants! Whether you’ve been gardening for years or are just getting started, creating a stunning summer garden can be a rewarding  experience.  Today, I am sharing information about my favorite flowers for summer planting.

But where do you start? With so many beautiful flowers to choose from, it is easy to get overwhelmed!  I am here to help you get started!    From learning how to choose the best flowers for your area to adding interest to your outdoor space, I’ve curated a list of resources to  help you create the garden of your dreams!

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of herbal infused tea and let’s start down the garden path!

Be ” In Your Zone”

The USDA has the country divided into various growing zones based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.  The zones range from 1a (Alaska) to 13 b (Puerto Rico).   The zones help gardeners determine which plants are most likely to thrive in which locations.  You can access the hardiness map here to get information about your growing zone.

When I lived in Illinois and Ohio, I was living in the hardiness zone of 6a.  Now that I am living in Southwest Florida, I am considered to be living in zone 10a.  Southwest Florida is considered to be tropical.   It has been somewhat of a challenge learning to garden in a different zone.  So many of the plants I loved in Illinois like hostas and tulips can’t grow here due to the high humidity and lack of cold weather.  But, I can have blooming plants outdoors practically year round!  That makes me very happy!

By staying in your zone, your flowers are more likely to thrive.  It is certainly possible to grow flowers that aren’t recommended for your growing zone, they just require more special handling.

Care of Flowers for Summer Planting

tags for zonal geraniums

In addition to knowing your growing zone, to be a successful gardener you also need to know how much light and water a particular plant needs. When purchasing plants from a greenhouse, nursery or online, the plants should come with a little plastic care tag.  Everything the plant requires will be listed on the tag!  If your plant doesn’t have a tag, you can always check the internet for more information!

Adequate light is one of the most important things your plants need. Most flowers require at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive. Be sure to choose a location in your garden that receives enough sunlight and avoid areas that are shaded for most of the day.  Too much sun can be harmful as well.  Most of my garden is in full sun so I need to be sure the plants & flowers I choose can handle the bright sun.

Another important factor is soil quality. Before planting directly into the ground, test your soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. Most flowers prefer soil that is slightly acidic with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil is lacking in nutrients, consider adding organic matter such as compost or fertilizer to improve its quality.  If you are going to be planting in containers, use a good quality potting mix.

Watering is also a crucial factor in the growth of your flowers. During the summer, it’s important to water your plants regularly, especially during periods of drought. Be sure to water your plants deeply, so the water reaches the roots, and avoid watering the leaves, as this can lead to fungal growth.

How Much Time & Space Do You Have?

If you are just getting started gardening, spend some time thinking about how much time you have to devote to your garden.  Even easy care  plants need some care!

If you live in a small space, try combo pots or container gardens.  Raised beds work great if you have mobility issues.  Vertical gardening might be an option as well.
