Before We Get Started -A Little Bit About Me

Whether this is your first visit or you are one of my regular readers,  I am so glad to have you here today!  I like to describe myself as a Zone 6a girl living in a tropical world!  If you are a gardener, you will understand what I mean!  My interests range from flowers ( a former florist) to flour (a former pizzeria owner ) and many things in between!  I like to use thyme in place of time when I am writing.  I love herbs, rusty stuff, gardening & pizza!  More details about me and my entrepreneurial journey can be found here:  Sprout/ Grow/ Bloom – My Journey

Let’s get started!

What are tallow berries and where to find them?

Tallow berries are small round berries that grow on the Chinese tallow tree. They are commonly used in floral arrangements and home decor due to their unique shape and neutral off white color.   Dried tallow berries are sometimes called popcorn berries because they look like tiny pieces of popcorn.  Dried natural tallow berries can be found at craft stores and at online retailers.  There are faux tallow berries available as well.   Stems of faux tallow berries have been added to the evergreen stems pictured below.

Decorating Tips: Using Dried Tallow Berries for a Whimsical, Charming Yet Rustic Look

There are so many ways to incorporate dried tallow berries into your home decor to create a charming and rustic look.  Here are a few of my favorite ideas to help spark your creativity:

1. Display them in a bowl or vase: Fill a decorative bowl or vase with dried tallow berries for a simple yet eye-catching centerpiece. You can mix them with other natural elements like pinecones or dried flowers for added texture and visual interest.

2. Pair tallow berries with neutral colors: Dried tallow berries have a warm, earthy tone that pairs well with neutral colors like beige, brown, or cream. Use them in combination with these colors to create a cohesive and natural look.

3. Mix tallow berries with other natural elements: Combine dried tallow berries with pinecones, dried flowers, or even twigs to create a visually interesting display. The combination of different textures and colors will add depth to your vignettes.

4. Fill decorative jars or bottles: Fill clear glass jars or bottles with dried tallow berries to create a rustic and charming display. You can place them on shelves, countertops, or even use them as table centerpieces.

5. Incorporate them into floral arrangements: Add dried tallow berries to floral arrangements for a pop of whimsy and texture. Tallow berries pair well with dried flowers, wheat stalks, or eucalyptus branches for a natural and rustic look.

6. Use them in craft projects: Get creative and use dried tallow berries in various craft projects. They can be glued onto wreaths, picture frames, or even used to make unique ornaments for the holiday season.

7.  Consider the season: Dried tallow berries can be used year-round, but they are particularly fitting for fall and winter decor. Pair them with seasonal elements like pumpkins or evergreen branches to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

8.  Create a wreath or garland: Use dried tallow berries to make a beautiful wreath or garland to hang on your front door, mantel, or staircase. Combine them with other dried foliage or ribbon for a festive and rustic touch.

By following these tips, you can easily create a rustic and natural look with dried tallow berries in your home decor. Let your creativity guide you and have fun experimenting with different arrangements and combinations.

Tallow Berries & Twine – A Simple Autumn Vignette

Often when I am designing or thinking about a potential project, I gather my objects together and come up with a theme.

Once I get the beginning of an idea, I like to give it a name.  I am all about alliteration!  One of my projects is call Red, Rustic & Reclaimed.

I named this project Tallow Berries & Twine!  The twine in the heart bowl pictured below is twine I saved from an order of pictures that I received!  My husband says I am a hoarder….  I will let you come to your own conclusion on that!

I gathered a few more elements for my vignette: a shallow rectangle wooden tray and a piece of fall fabric.

pastel colored fall fabric placed in a low wooden tray. The start of an Autumn vignette

and a piece of vintage lace:

I found this piece of fall themed fabric while I was going thru my Mom’s things during the downsizing/moving process. While I did have to cull the fabric collection quite a bit, I did manage to keep several pieces of material, lace, and other bits and bobs that I can use in my displays. The piece of lace pictured above was left over from altering my Mom’s wedding dress so that I could wear it in my wedding a few (ok more than a few! ) years ago.

Back to designing the vignette:

To add even more texture to the vignette, I tucked a piece of burlap underneath the fall fabric and then draped the piece of lace over the top.

The next step was to nestle a small wooden heart shaped bowl in the folds of the fabric.  I placed a medium sized heart shaped bowl at the other end of the tray.  In the center, I added a hand tied silk arrangement to see how it looked.

I decided the bouquet was too large and swapped it out for a bundle of dried tallow berries! I placed a smaller bundle of faux flowers in front of the medium sized heart bowl.  To add a little height to the arrangement, I placed a primitive wooden bench behind the tray.

Maintenance and care for dried tallow berry decorations

Taking care of your dried tallow berry decorations is important to ensure they last and maintain their rustic charm. Here are a few maintenance and care tips to keep in mind:

1. Dust regularly: Like any other decorative item, dried tallow berries can accumulate dust over time. Use a soft brush or a feather duster to gently remove any dust buildup. Avoid using water or cleaning solutions, as they can damage the berries.

2. Avoid direct sunlight: Dried tallow berries are sensitive to sunlight and prolonged exposure can cause them to fade or become brittle. Keep them away from windows or areas with direct sunlight to preserve their color and texture.

3. Handle with care: Dried tallow berries are delicate and can easily break or crumble if mishandled. When moving or rearranging your decorations, be gentle and avoid applying too much pressure.

4. Store properly: If you’re not using your dried tallow berry decorations year-round, it’s important to store them properly to prevent damage. Place them in a cool, dry place away from moisture and extreme temperatures. You can also use airtight containers or ziplock bags to keep them protected.

5. Check for pests: Occasionally, pests like moths or beetles can be attracted to dried natural materials. Inspect your dried tallow berries regularly for any signs of infestation, such as holes or larvae. If you notice any pests, remove the affected berries and consider using natural pest repellents or consulting a professional.

By following these maintenance and care tips, you can ensure that your dried tallow berry decorations stay beautiful and last for a long time. Enjoy the rustic and natural charm they bring to your home!

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
