Before We Get Started-
No matter how you arrived here today, whether you are joining me from one of my friend’s blogs, you are one of my regular readers, you found me on Google or via Hometalk, I am so glad you are here! My name is Kimberly and I have a passion for flowers (a former florist) and flour (a former pizzeria owner) and many things in between! Especially rusty and chippy items!
I love to share all the things I have learned over the years. Sometimes I tell stories about my life. Other times, I will share a craft or a recipe. I often use the word “thyme” in place of “time”. I hope you enjoy your thyme here today and learn at least one thing during your visit!
Let’s get ready to bring the garden inside for the holidays!
Create a DIY Succulent Christmas Wreath
Before you can begin creating your own succulent Christmas wreath, you’ll need to make a few decisions and then gather all the necessary materials. Here’s the first thing you’ll need to decide: what type of base you want to use for your wreath. Once you make that decision, then you can gather the materials you will need. The basic materials include potting mix, a variety of small succulent plants, greening pins, spanish moss and to add a festive touch: some beaded decorative wire. Other things you might want to have on hand are sheet moss, a small scoop for planting and a watering can. You can find all of these materials at your local garden center or home decor store. Once you have everything you need, you’re ready to start creating your holiday wreath!
Step 1: Choose a Base For Your Succulent Wreath
Before we dig into the process of selecting our succulents, we need to choose the perfect base for our wreath. There are several different types of wreath bases that you can choose. I am going to step a little bit away from what you might normally think of when choosing a wreath base. I am going to use a terra cotta umbrella pot for my base!
I had originally potted this umbrella pot last spring. The picture of the filled umbrella pot below is how the planter looked after it had been growing for 3 weeks.
Fast forward to now. I wasn’t paying as much attention to the pot this summer as I should have been and the umbrella pot was in serious need of a refresh!
A few of the plants will be re-used in the new wreath and the two taller ones were repotted and now have a new home in the entryway!
Now that I have my wreath base picked out, it is thyme to prep the terra cotta umbrella pot!
Step 2: Prepare the Wreath Base
If you are starting from scratch, fill the pot about 2/3 of the way full with a quality potting mix designed to use with succulents. The potting mix should be fairly loose, not compacted.
Step 3: Select the Succulent Plants
When it comes to selecting succulents for your wreath, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the overall look and feel you want for your creation. Do you want a variety of colors and textures, or a more uniform look? Once you have a general idea, you can start choosing specific types of succulents.
When selecting succulents, you’ll want to look for plants that are small enough to fit comfortably in your container and that work well together. For example, you might choose a few different varieties of echeveria to create a cohesive look, or mix in some trailing varieties to add interest and motion.
It’s also important to consider the care requirements of your succulents. Some varieties need more sun than others, while some prefer more frequent watering. Choose plants that have similar needs to make caring for your wreath as easy as possible.
I had purchased a tray of mixed succulents from the hardware store a few weeks before I assembled my wreath. The tray included a nice variety of different colors and textures of succulents.
I also had a number of pots of succulents in the garden. I cut a few pieces off of one of the plants. I also wanted to use a few of the plants that were “leftover” from the umbrella pot arrangement I had made in the late Spring.
Now that I have my perfect succulents picked out, it’s almost thyme to actually plant them! But first, a little more prep has to be done. Let’s divide the succulents.
Step 4: Divide the Succulents and Plant them
Since my succulents are all growing together in the same flat, I need to cut them apart. If you are using individual pots of succulents, you can skip this step! You will need a sharp knife to gently cut the plants apart.
Once I divided the plants, I planted them around the perimeter of the pot. I added enough additional soil to cover the roots.
I used the small succulents as accents. In order to secure the small succulents, I used a greening pin.
The photo below is how the planter looked right after it was planted.
A few tips: If you are using individual pots of succulents, carefully remove your succulents from their pots and gently loosen the roots. Place the succulents into the soil, making sure they are evenly spaced and at the same height. Gently add extra soil around the plants to secure them in place. Water thoroughly. Add extra soil if necessary. Top the soil with a bit of wet sheet moss or spanish moss to add a finishing touch.
Step 5: Decorate Your Succulent Christmas Wreath
Now that the succulents are planted, you could stop here. While the wreath is pretty like this:
I decided it need a little something extra for the holidays. I looked into my stash of floral design things and decided to use this:
To use the wire, simply cut off a piece of wire and then weave it around the wreath. It is that simple to add a festive touch!
Now you are ready to use it as a holiday tabletop wreath! Happy Holidays!
