Reflections on 2020

Spread the love

One Year Ago 12-31-2019

Dave & I NYE 2019

As Dave & I posed for a picture in front of the Christmas tree at Charlotte Harbor, we had no idea of the challenges that would face the world in 2020.  We were looking forward to some exciting family events and hoping to make some improvements to our home in Florida.  I was hopeful that my farmhouse in Illinois would soon sell.

Like many others, the coronavirus impacted our plans.  While neither of us has gotten sick, the virus took a toll on the two happy events we had planned for the year.  I also think it has negatively affected my ability to sell my farmhouse in Illinois.  I am hopeful that 2021 will improve the real estate situation in Illinois!

March 2020

In mid March, we traveled to Las Vegas for my oldest bonus son’s wedding.  The coronavirus was just starting to widely impact travel.  While we were there for the wedding, the city of Las Vegas was gradually shutting down.  It was quite eerie to watch the hotels and casinos shut down.  On a happier note, Ryan and Misty had a very lovely wedding at one of the wedding chapels.  Everyone got home safely after the celebration in Las Vegas.

April 2020

Great Aunt Pauline Turns 102 4/11/2020

My Great Aunt Pauline turned 102 in April.  Due to the virus, we had to have a socially distanced celebration.  Not quite what we had hoped !  She is an amazing woman!  She is now 102 3/4 and is doing wonderful!  You can read more about her here:

Farmhouse Front Porch Early Summer

In late May, I drove to Illinois from Florida for what I thought would be a 10 day stay.  45 days later, I returned to Florida!  Even with spending 45 days in Illinois, I couldn’t get it all done and had to return in September.

The downsizing/relocating/selling process has taken far longer than I ever imagined it would.  I have chronicled my journey so far in 5 blog posts starting with Thyme to Let Go How I Downsized the Family Homestead Part 1

Plans for 2021

I am still in the process of finalizing my goals for the blog for 2021.  I am hopeful that my property in Illinois will sell soon, as bittersweet as that will be, it does need to happen.  We have started an addition/renovation at the Florida house.

I am trying to wrap myself in hope versus fear as we face the year!

This morning, we woke up to find a bloom on this hibiscus!  The picture is from April.  It hadn’t bloomed since September.  We are taking it as a sign that things will be better in 2021!

This is a great post. Even in ordinary times the best laid plans don’t always work. I think if 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we need to go with the flow. Thanks for sharing this.

It’s amazing to look back at where we were a year ago with no idea what was coming … some things seem so long ago and other just yesterday. Happy your son’s wedding was a joyous occasion. Your farmhouse will sell soon … I just know it! xo

Thank you , Juliet! It is embarrassing to admit how long it has been on the market. But it has given me the chance to work thru the letting go process.

This was such a nice recap of your year. Glad you found some bright spots, like your son’s wedding, finding a clever way to celebrate your aunt. Good luck with selling your farm house. It looks amazing!
