My Favorite Curbside Find!

Have you ever found a treasure sitting on the curb and thought “Did they really mean to throw this out?“

My Favorite Curbside Find!

While I was driving to pick up lunch one day, I saw this amazing piece of primitive furniture that had been set out on the boulevard for the upcoming town wide clean up day.  I couldn’t believe that someone would actually throw this away.  Since I knew whose house it was, I called him up and said ” Pat, do you know there is an incredible base cabinet sitting on the boulevard?  Is it suppose to be there?”  He said he knew it was there, he put it out for the trash people to pick up.  I asked if I could have it and he said sure.  I am sure that he was rolling his eyes while talking to me!  It was really too heavy for me to lift myself so I called my Mom’s handyman and asked him to meet me in town so he could help me load it.

I didn’t have room for it in the house at the time , so we left it on the porch until I could get it cleaned up and make room for it in the living room.  It was a few months before I had thyme to clean it up.

I really am not a very good painter.  I prefer to scrub , maybe sand it a bit, and call it a day.  If a piece requires much more than a good scrubbing with Murphy’s Oil soap or something similar, I probably am not going to deal with it.  I just don’t have the patience to wait for the paint to dry!  I keep thinking I will develop this patience and have a collection of chalk paint that I need to start using.

Actually, I do enjoy using spray paint!  I have successfully used spray paint to refresh several things including this side table:

Back to the primitive cabinet…..

Just in thyme for Thanksgiving that year, I was ready to put it in the living room.  My husband was not a fan.  He doesn’t quite share my love of the shabby, rusty , and unique items.  We eventually drilled holes in the cabinet in order to set up the stereo/cd system.

When it came time to start deciding which pieces were going to be able to go to Florida with us, unfortunately this one did not make the cut.  It was really too big and bulky for the house we were moving into.  It might have worked on the lanai for storage but the humidity in Florida is really hard on wood.  I ended up selling it to one of the pickers that came out to the farm.

[…] In the interest of marital harmony, I let Dave “win” a couple of battles.  I sold my primitive base cabinet even though I really like it.  It probably is a little to primitive for the look and feel I was going for.   The story of how I found the cabinet can be found here:  […]
