Are you looking for a caffeine free alternative to your nightly mug of black tea or coffee? Why not try a caffeine free herbal tea blend?

Mid-Winter Tea Thyme

What could be more comforting than a warm drink on a cold winter night?  Instead of a mug of black tea, why not try a caffeine free herbal tea blend?  I would like to share a very brief introduction to Herbal Teas and a recipe for a hand blended tea that you can make at home.

Caffeine Free Herbal Tea

What Exactly is an Herbal Tea?

An Herbal Tea is an infusion or combination of various parts of edible plants.  People have made herbal teas for a very long time.  Herbal teas have become more popular over the past few decades in part to their unique flavors and possible health benefits.  Herbal teas started to gain in popularity as our lives became more stressful.  True herbal teas are also a caffeine-free alternative to black tea and coffee.

An Herbal Tea is technically not a tea since it is not made from leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant. This plant (Camellia Sinensis) is where tea, such as black tea, green tea or white tea, actually comes from.

When you are ready to brew your cup of herbal tea, you will need a tea ball or muslin bag to contain the tea blend while it is steeping in the mug or teacup.  (Note: the tea ball pictured is actually bigger than what you would need for one serving. I couldn’t find my smaller one!)

Brewing Tips

When brewing green tea, herb teas or tisanes allow the boiling water to cool down a few degrees before pouring it over the leaves.  You want to do this so that the water doesn’t scald the green tea or herb leaves.  The brewing time for herb teas and green tea can be between 5 and 10 minutes.

To Brew 1 serving of Herbal Tea: heat 1 cup of water just to the boiling point.  Let the water cool down a bit before adding it to your mug or tea cup.  Place 1 teaspoon of the Mid Winter Tea Thyme Tea blend in the tea ball or a muslin bag.  Place tea ball or muslin bag in mug or tea cup. Allow the herbs to steep for 5 to 10 minutes.  Remove tea ball or muslin bag .

Enjoy!

General Tips When Using Herbs

When making custom herbal tea blends, you usually will be using dried herbs.  Dried herbs have a longer shelf life.  If you want to make a small batch of herbal tea using fresh herbs, you can adjust the proportions with the following formula:  Use twice as much fresh herb as you would dried herbs.  For example, if the recipe calls for 2 cups of dried herb you would use 4 cups of fresh herb.

When working with fresh herbs, be sure to bruise the herb leaves by cutting or tearing them.  This allows the essential oil of the herb to be released.   The essential oil is what give the flavor to the recipe.

I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe I don’t talk about my faith a lot. I do believe God puts certain people in your path for a reason. An example of this occurred on Tuesday. It was colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy day. I was really nervous about how it would all work since it was my first time since I had my cancer surgery.

The nurse that was taking care of me in the pre op area turned out to be the same nurse who had prayed for me last year. My husband was in the parking lot of the medical center speaking with his friend who happened to work at the center with this particular nurse. I was very sick at the time and they prayed for my healing. It was great to be able to thank her in person and let her see that the prayers had been answered. ❤️

Then the anesthesiologist came in and told me about his cousin who had also been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer about a year ago. He mentioned some of the treatments his cousin had had and how important a positive attitude is. I was touched that he took the time to tell me about his cousin’s experience.

We had arranged in advance to have my husband’s friend as the nurse anesthesist. He was able to pray with us as well as reassure us about the procedure.

The procedure went well. The three polyps that the surgeon removed were sent to pathology. The report is already back and there no evidence of cancer. Prayers were answered again❤️
