Today, I would love to show you how to create a red geranium basket.  I started planting this combination of zonal geraniums & Proven Winners Diamond Frost when I had my flower shop!

We would sell a lot of patio pots, combo pots and hanging baskets for Mother’s Day.  I marketed this combo basket as “Diamond Cloud”.  Once the basket has a chance to fill out, it looks like the geraniums are floating in a cloud of fluffy white flowers!

Let’s Get Started

Geraniums come in a variety of colors. I made a basket using the salmon pink geraniums and you can see the results here: How to Create a  Geranium Hanging Basket

For today’s project, I am choosing the red geraniums.

You will also need a couple of pots of either Diamond Frost or Diamond Snow.  They are similar plants. The flowers of the Diamond Snow are smaller.  I love them both!  More information about Diamond Frost can be found here: Proven Winners Diamond Frost

If you are unable to find Diamond Frost or Diamond Snow at your local greenhouse, they can be ordered directly from Proven Winners Direct.  They will come shipped to you in a box!  They offer a complete line of annuals, perennials and shrubs.

The Supplies –

In addition to your plants, you will need a hanging basket and a liner.  Potting mix or potting soil is also needed.  As a former florist, I happened to have a large stash of hanging baskets as well as liners.  I chose a 12″ hanging basket. If you don’t already have a basket with a liner, they are available at garden centers, home improvement stores, green houses and similar retail outlets. Angel moss liner in basket

For potting mix, I like to use a mix that includes ingredients that help with moisture control.  What you don’t want to use is soil straight from your garden.  I made the mistake of doing that once when I was younger.  My plants did not thrive or even survive!

The Process

After gathering your basket, liner , plants and soil you are ready to get started.  I sprinkled some biodegradable packing peanuts in the bottom of the liner to save on the amount of potting mix I will use.

Next, I added enough potting mix to cover the peanuts and filled the basket liner a little less than 1/2 full.  Gently remove the plants from their containers and place them in the liner.  The ones that are going around the edge of the basket are placed at an angle while the geraniums are placed straight up.  By placing the plants at an angle, it allows them to cover the edge of the basket and it looks more natural.  I used 2 geraniums and 2 Diamond Frost plants.

Once you have the plants placed how you want them, add more potting mix to cover the roots.  Add enough soil so that the roots are covered but leave about an inch space between the soil and the top of the liner.

Normally I would use moss to dress the top of the soil.  This helps keep the moisture in and also gives the basket a more finished look.  I didn’t use any this time since I was doing this “on the fly ” and didn’t have access to any moss.

Once the basket is planted, you are ready to water it.  Once any excess water has drained out, you are ready to use the basket to decorate your outdoor area.   You can attach a hook so it could be a hanging basket if you desire.

I placed the basket in this old garden seeder to make a whimsical accent for the yard.

Replacement liners, available in a variety of sizes to fit your basket.  This is a link for a 12 in replacement liner.

Normally, I add sheet moss to the top of all of my hanging baskets, combo pots, patio pots.  I didn’t have any when I was working on this project.  This is the type of moss I would normally use.  Soak it in a bowl of water, squeeze out excess water and then place moss over the soil of your basket or pot.

I use a lot so I buy it in bulk.

it is available in smaller quantities as well:
