Summer is the perfect thyme to decorate your tables with red, white & blue items!
With Flag Day right round the corner and the 4th of July less than a month away, I decided to repost this post that I had written last January. The post was geared towards the Inauguration but the ideas can be used anytime you want to celebrate the Red, White & Blue! I also added some additional pictures as well as links to other posts that might help you get ready to celebrate this summer!
Looking for a festive way to dress your table for the Inauguration? Let me show you how I incorporated Red, White & Blue !
Several years ago, I was blessed to be able to accompany my Dad on an Honor Flight trip to our nation’s capital. The picture above is of the fountain at the World War 2 Memorial. The Washington Memorial stands in the background of the picture. The Washington Memorial was built to honor George Washington, our nation’s first President. This week, we will inaugurate our 46th President.
The Calendar Supper at The Church
When I was growing up, our church always put on a dinner they called “The Calendar Supper”. The ladies were assigned a different month of the year and were tasked with decorating a table with a theme that related to that month. They would prepare a salad and a dessert specific to the month. Ham loaf, scalloped potatoes and green beans were served as the main course. The ladies could either use the church’s dishes or bring in their own. As a kid, it seemed like my Mom always got a lame month. Her group would get January or August. She never got the cool months like February or December.
In the Fall of 2012, the church ladies decided to do a Calendar Supper as a fund raiser. They hadn’t done one in years. I raced to signed up to have a table. I KNEW they would give me a “good” month…. after all, I was the town florist. Who else should get a “good” month but someone who is gonna kick that table decorating out of the park (or in our case, the basement). But guess what, I got……. January. Really?
After I was finished muttering about the unfairness of it all, I decided to do an Inauguration Day theme. One reason was I could serve my beautiful Red, White and Blue salad and another reason was we had a ton of Red, White and Blue decorating things at the flower shop. And I knew where they were. Sometimes not being able to find something was a problem at the flower shop. The recipe for the Red, White & Blue salad can be found here:
The Table Decoration
My best friend Robin offered to help me with my table. We used a piece of glittery red felt as a table runner. A single red rose surrounded by baby’s breath accented with a red/white & blue bow was placed in a ruby red vase. I had 4 red vases. A festive centerpiece was placed in the middle of the table. Two sets of three flags also graced the center of the table.
The plates were made of melamine and were actually some outdoor picnic plates my Mom had. The cups were red Solo cups to cut down on dish washing. The tables were set for 8 people. We sent the red rose vases home with 4 of the people.
I was actually quite pleased with how our table turned out. In hindsight, I think the ladies gave me January as a compliment. They knew I could come up with a creative way to honor the month of January!
Red, White & Blue At Home
Another version of a Patriotic table setting. This one is in my parents’ dining room. I used milk glass glasses in place of the red Solo cups. A Red/White & Blue accented tray is placed in the center of the table and holds a beautiful cobalt blue vase from Denmark as well as a crystal vase with two American Flags. The plates were accented with the use of a red placemat.
