It’s September! Thyme to start decorating for the Fall season. Let me share a few Autumn home decorating ideas to get you started!
Do you love the traditional fall colors of rust, orange, gold and bronze? Fall is my favorite time of year. It can be crisp outside, but still warm & cozy inside. I absolutely love the colors of fall, especially the rich reds and oranges.
Here are some decorating ideas incorporating them!
The traditional fall colors of orange, rust, golden yellow and burgundy are featured in this outdoor display for a fall wedding at a country church.
When I had the flower shop, we decorated this church several times a year. The year this picture was taken, we were able to coordinate the wedding decorations with the Harvest mass that took place a week later. The squirrels in town had a feast eating the corn bundles on the railing!
Fall – My Favorite Season!
Fall is my favorite thyme of year! In the Midwest, fall means crisp mornings, hayrack rides, leaves changing colors, Homecoming football games and much more! Fall in Southwest Florida is quite a bit different! After moving to Florida in late September 2019, I discovered that it can sometimes be hotter in September and October than it was in July! I have had to adapt the way that I decorate. But I am adjusting!
Fall At the Flower Shop
Labor Day marked the unofficial start of Fall in Illinois. At the flower shop, I started getting mums in by the end of August. Often it was still quite warm and windy. The combination of heat and wind was hard on the mums. It was usually easier to keep them watered by setting them in a kiddie pool and adding water to the pool. The mums would soak up the water thru the holes in the pots.
I loved to make European Dish gardens year round. A European dish garden is made by placing a group of blooming and green plants in a basket or other container. They are left in their individual pots as opposed to actually planting them together in the soil in the container.

In the fall, I could get even more creative! I loved using ornamental kale, pansies, pine cones, and pumpkins . I even used succulents upon occasion!

A Flower Shop in Lido, Italy
The beautiful pictures of fall mums, blooming plants and assorted green plants were taken on the island of Lido, located off of Venice Italy. I was surprised to see similar blooming plants to what the florists in the US would have in their shops during the fall. It was so fun to see all the blooming plants inside the shops that were along the street.
Scarecrows!
It wouldn’t be Fall without at least one scarecrow! The scarecrow below was all decked out for the Estate sale we had at the farm in early October 2018. The scarecrow had a makeover by one of my dear friends and she was wearing a vintage shirt of mine from high school!

Farmhouse Mantel & Other Decorating Ideas
One thing that I really miss in the Florida house is having a mantel to decorate! I am still trying to figure out where to put a faux one in the house somewhere! Well, I know where it is going…. I just need to figure out how to make it stand up!
Here is one of the ways I decorated the farmhouse mantel for fall!
Real pumpkins sometimes don’t work very well for interior decorating! Now pumpkins are available in all different materials, ceramic, resin, plastic even velvet! I love the texture of these pumpkins and their cute little chenille stems are just adorable!
A very simple vignette. A watercolor of an old home in Ivesdale, IL. painted by a family friend accented by a hand hewn dough bowl filled with faux pumpkins, leaves and berries. I am not sure why I left the pot pourri in the bag! I guess I liked the orange ribbon!
A very easy pumpkin centerpiece! I simply perched this resin pumpkin on top of this rustic wooden pedestal!
And then added a few wispy bittersweet sprigs!
